Thank you, Dallas consignment stores, for putting the fun back in furniture shopping. The city abounds with cool spots for fixer-upper to pristine-condition furniture.

Shopping pre-owned pieces yields lots of conversation starters, fabulous finds, and even a bargain or two. Many of the spots offer overnight approval; simply leave a credit card on file. And if you need to make room for all the new pieces by finding a good home for your existing furniture (in stylishly good condition, please!), check their consignment policies.

We’ve selected a few of our favorite thrill-of-the-hunt hot spots, including a three-for-one stop on Riverfront Boulevard. So pack that measuring tape, take some smartphone pics of the rooms in your house and away you go.

Again & Again
Since its founding in the Knox-Henderson neighborhood in 2005, Leslie Pritchard’s shop has been a go-to source for interesting finds and wow-inducing makeovers. Now established in the Design District, Pritchard continues the love affair with duckling-to-swan pieces. As you browse the 12,000-square-foot showroom, check out fabric swatches for suggested reupholstering. Again & Again custom builds furniture too.

Antiques Moderne
Embark on a furniture lover’s dream expedition at John Bacile’s 20,000-square-foot warehouse. The space is packed with a rapidly changing inventory of solidly sourced pieces from the ’30s to the ’70s, so look carefully, as the perfect item may be buried under something else fabulous. The store also offers furniture restoration: refinishing, lacquering and reupholstery.

Area 25
This lively showroom is a terrific source for like-new furnishings and art. Owner Cheryl Lawrence has relationships with designers and home stagers who consign there; we’ve witnessed frequent sightings of selections from locally based Arteriors and Global Views. Word to the wise: Indecisiveness is not a good thing here. If you see it, buy it before someone else does.

Give  & Take
Owner Jean Nelson specializes in upscale midcentury and modern décor and styles attractive room displays to showcase a wide selection of eminently reusable goods. Refinishing and reupholstery are available.

Vinya
Vinya specializes in high-end pieces with a modern feel, and the newish digs in the Design District are filled with vignettes for styling inspiration. Owner Debra Owens hand selects the inventory. Whether it’s a set of Christian Liaigre chairs for Holly Hunt (yours, not ours, alas, for $12,000) or a Cantoni dining room suite, expect consistent quality and design bang for the buck.
