For two years, Sane Energy Project has been working in collaboration with our upstate allies and talented technical consultants to create a groundbreaking, interactive mapping tool that catalogs the existing and proposed shale gas infrastructure in New York State. Now, you can see all the pipelines, compressor stations, power plants, frack waste dump sites and industry support services all in one place. It also connects users to local groups, putting a face on the people power of our movement.
On September 20th, one day before the climate march, we launched the map as part of the Climate Convergence. We demonstrated the map and the audience heard firsthand accounts from affected frontline communities and met many of the contributors to this project. Anti-corruption advocate Zephyr Teachout spoke on the map’s context as a tool for the movement. Attendees were able to try out the map for themselves, using provided iPads.
