Sandy, Irene and Lee prompted efforts to deal with future extreme weather events
For the past week the sloop has been without a mainsail. Upon the discovery of a crack in the boom, the large spar on the mainsail that runs fore-and-aft, the crew removed the mainsail and splinted the boom to safely stabilize it until it can be replaced during the winter maintenance period. The mainsail, which is beginning to show its age, is also due to be replaced.
For the remainder of the season, which ends on Halloween, the CLEARWATER will continue to conduct modified education programs.
Next spring, the CLEARWATER will sail with a new boom attached to a new mainsail. Will you be ready to haul the lines?
