It's actually a map of twitter and flickr locations, not a map of Europe by night.

This makes a lot more sense. There's no reason for so many lights in places like the Alps or rural Crete but there's probably plenty of pics on flickr.

Well, nobody is twittering or flickring in Africa, it seems.

I was baffled by exactly this, went to google the population density in the Alps for half an hour, only to find this in the comment =(

On Euro coins, there's a map of all the countries in the European Union. Non-EU countries aren't shown, and Norway isn't in the EU. So there is quite literally a picture of a massive cock hanging over Europe on the back of every Euro.

[–]Allydarvel 1 point2 points  (5 children)

They actually minted a coin which was much worse..mapmakers usually change an aspect so that they can recognise their own maps to stop theft. They one the EU got for the coins had a Scandinavia that had been made to look..different

Heh, found it http://lolpics.se/pics/8715.jpg

[–]ComusLoM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is due to Norway not being a part of the EU, note that only EU countries are represented on this coin.

[–]Frostiken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That isn't because of 'personal flair', that would be because Norway isn't a member of the EU. I think they just added Norway later to stop it from being clearly someone's junk on a coin.

Yeah that's more logical. I was trying to to figure out why so few of the oil and gas platforms in the North Sea were lit up. Then you say it's Twitter and it makes more sense.

[–]timothysmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a little baffled by the amount of light in the mountainous Sogn og Fjordane(Western Norway), so this makes sense. Tourists take a lot of pictures of the mountains, valleys, fjords and the coastline.

[–]timmeh42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dutch have lights everywhere on their highways.

In the south, London is a very big city, and has quite the suburbs and satellite cities.
What's going on in middle England I cannot tell, I don't think Manchester is that big.
but if you look at the demographic map you can see that there is an area of high population density.

Maybe someone from Great Britain can explain?

[–]MrCodeSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Manchester and Liverpool merge in to one great blob on that map due to the satellite towns between them.

Slightly south of that you can just about make out Stoke and south of that is Birmingham, there are also quite a few towns/cities surrounding Brum that are hard to distinguish. (Wolves, Walsall, Lichfield, Tamworth)

Leeds -> Sheffield -> Nottingham forms quite a visible strip

England really is quite close together and the majority of our towns/major highways are lit.

[–]BourgeoisBanana 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]wggn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dutchie here. Plenty of highways without lights still. But there's towns everywhere, often just a few km from each other. And most towns have their own brightly lit sports fields. There's also a ton of greenhouses around.

Closeup of the southwest side of NL, and northwest side of belgium by Andre Kuipers from the ISS: http://www.flickr.com/photos/astro_andre/6769497883/

The brightest spots are the greenhouses.

[–]basvdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not lighting, but Twitter and Flickr activity. Both countries appear to have much of it, probably because of higher Internet connectivity and population density than other countries.

There's a lot of cool stuff here. The nile, korea, how empty australia is, the himalayas, the tiny little dots in africa, a bunch of lights in the middle of nowhere in Russia. With seemingly the same light density as southern India.

[–]Bluenosedcoop 34 points35 points  (8 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really is hard to grasp just how empty Australia is till you actually get there and take a drive through some of the more isolated roads, I was in aus for 6 months doing some work and visiting family.

One job me and a friend had was to deliver some goods to a mining town called Newman in the middle of nowhere, We had to take a near 1400km drive from Perth and it really is amazing that at times you can travel 100s of km and not see one building or person at all, I knew it was empty before i went to aus but you don't truly realise it till you see it in person.

Also the lights in the middle of nowhere in Russia is due to Russias largest gas/oil fields.

[–]king_walnut 9 points10 points  (4 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So there aren't any fuel stops or diners or anything along the massive roads? My car has a range of 400 miles, does that mean I wouldn't be able to drive it across Australia?

[–]Spenk009 14 points15 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You either take extra tanks along or you stick to your most efficient speed (highest gear at low revs). Also, he said 60s of miles (100s of kms), so your 400 mile range could be split up in two or three fillups on the 872,2 mile trip.

[–]Bluenosedcoop 9 points10 points  (1 child)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every couple of hundred kms yeah there is but in between just nothingness.

Just go on Gmaps and look at some of the roads and follow them, You will see how empty, Like the Great Northern Highway, Theres even points where the gmaps car has stopped.

[–]AlbrechtVonRoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some surprises:

Very top of Alaska is a line of light. Nigeria coast? Area around New Dehli (toward Nepal?) Nile, as referenced already. Very dense.

[–]Bluenosedcoop 13 points14 points  (6 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is the Nigerian coast and it is so bright due to the oil industry that exists all along Nigerian coast, It's one of the larger producers of petroleum in the world.

Also the lights in Alaska are for the same reason oil.

What do you see of Russia here besides St Petersburg? (Ok Kaliningrad and couple of other swaths, too).

[–]Atheist101 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–]EatSleepJeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bright concentration of light due north of India are the Samotlor Oil Fields and the gas fields of Yamalia. Further north and west is more production fields in Nenetsia.

The rough east-west line from Moscow is the Trans Siberian Railway.

[–]Dwotci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The two large groups of bright lights in Siberia are oil fields, cities are concentrated in Western Russia and (in Siberia) along the southern border.

[–]Bluenosedcoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the mass of lights in central/north Russia (directly north of India) is due to the large oil/gas industry up there.

[–]Teckel22[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I live in London and I was just thinking the other day about how far I'd have to go* to be actually alone. It's a rare thing. There is a shit ton of us in not very much space. Yet as someone else said, there's still a lot of open space. I went to a Kent county park on a Monday morning the other week and at the top of the North Downs it was just me and the husband.

*obviously not 'far' in any 'I live in a country which has different time zones' kind of way but far in a British kind of way (e.g anything over 45 minutes on a motorway)

[–]AnticitizenPrime 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just got back last week from a three-week trip to the UK. I rented a car and drove from London to Dover, then west to Cornwall, then Cardiff, up through Wales, then east to Edinburgh, up to Aberdeen, west again through the whiskey trail, and went camping for a few days in Glencoe (where I didn't see another human for over a day), then flew out of Glasgow.

I was really surprised to see how much green, open land there was in a place so populated. Everyone in Glasgow is stacked on top of each other in huge tenement buildings and then farmland begins right outside the city. In America all those people would be in suburbs stretching out for miles.

[–]Blackspur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we are like 50 ish on the most densely populated countries. Which is pretty dense considering 99% of the countries before that are incredibly small islands. I think that number also accounts for Wales and Scotland as well so if you were to discount those to areas of land it is within the top 10 I think.

I was wondering about that. The many greenhouses lit at night might be a reason. Or maybe the streetlights along the highways? I guess the different wavelenghts of the lighting might also be a factor in the perceived greater brightness compared to its neighbours.

That is true, yet the past few months I noticed that they turn off the lights at night between intersections and exits, unless it's bad weather.

You sometimes hear it on Radio1 during the traffic reports. They mention that the lights have been turned on on advice of "wegen en verkeer".

[–]672 7 points8 points  (7 children)

But you can't compare a country to a region (Belgium is 7 times bigger than the Ruhr).

Compare it to the Flemish Diamond (800 hab per km²) and it'll make more sense.

Compare it to the Korean Peninsula.

For pointing out how gloriously efficient North Korea has been at eliminating night-time light pollution? I bet South Koreans can't even see half the stars at night the North Koreans do!

If you would have a picture like this from above Berlin, you could easily see where the wall used to be from the color of light bulbs.

[–]Charliiiiie 15 points16 points  (3 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems that the street lamps are not the same in the west and in the east of Berlin. They work on gas in the west, and on electricity in the east, thus creating a different color. See this thread.

[–]Spenk009 7 points8 points  (1 child)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Other way around: gas -> east, electricity -> west

[–]Charliiiiie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Indeed, it seems more logical.

[–]CalvinDehaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Governments pay people to buy and install light bulbs on street lamps. When an area was once ruled by two completely different governments, you get two completely different light bulbs.

I call bullshit. There is no way you can clearly see Rhodes from space at night.

As someone from the UK, i think that picture is slightly exaggerated. Driving through the south country-side the other day (about 100 miles) I had my fog lights on about 80% of the time because it was so dark...

Cool pic though =)

Very interesting! Can anyone explain why the area around Britain-Netherlands is so active? I've heard that many Dutch ports (like Rotterdam) are the 'gateways to Europe', but can anyone explain why that area in particular?
