A number of Canadian mining companies with U.S. subsidiaries have filed for bankruptcy in recent years.  They've left substantial environmental impacts at their U.S. based mining operations, and significant clean-up costs to U.S. taxpayers.  This fact sheet provides examples illustrating the long-term environmental and financial liabilities associated with such bankruptices in five western states.
