American Water Works Company is the largest publicly traded U.S. water utility company, serving approximately 14 million people in more than 30 states and two Canadian provinces.

American Water has come under fire from communities across the country for charging high rates, providing poor service, endangering public safety and lacking public accountability. From Birmingham, Ala., in the 1950s (“The general public will not accept that we continue to pay damyankees [to run the water system].”) to Felton, Calif., in 2008, communities across the country have wrested local control of their water systems from American Water.
