A New Victory in Rosia Montana

Our partners in Romania shared some good news with us yesterday: The Romanian Parliament rejected legal amendments that would have paved the way for the development of the proposed Rosia Montana mine by Canadian-owned Gabriel Resources. If built, the residents of Rosia Montana would have to be forcibly resettled because the mine would destroy the entire town.
This is the latest in a series of victories for the Romanian people. Parliament members voted against changes to the national mining law that would fast-track the development of what would be Europe’s largest open-pit gold mine.
Earthworks has closely followed the struggle to resist this mine, which has gone on for over a decade. Last month, the Parliament also rejected the mine in response to worldwide protests. This may not yet be a final victory, but momentum to protect Rosia Montana from irresponsible mining is going strong.
