Verbal harassment experiment featuring 'silent walker' goes viral

Posted: Updated:
(KLTV) - Just how much attention does a woman walking alone garner from men in New York? A new video released this week hopes to answer that question.

The video, posted Tuesday, has gathered more than 1.2 million views. Posted by Street HarassmentVideo, and directed by Rob Bliss Creative, the roughly 2-minute clip features a woman walking silently through Manhattan, wearing jeans and a crewneck t-shirt, over a 10-hour period.

The video alleges that during the experiment, the woman experienced more than 100 instances of verbal street harassment, not including winks and whistles. Comments ranged from the polite, "How you doing today," to irritation, "Somebody's acknowledging you for being beautiful. You should say, 'Thank you,' more."  The woman received a slew of comments, compliments and, in one case, was followed for nearly five minutes by a man who did not speak.

The video aims to promote Hollaback! - a nonprofit group dedicated to ending street harassment. The clip has raised a debate about harassment, with some YouTube users arguing that the feedback she received was mostly positive and not harassment.
