No Fracking Way

Frackin’ Front Groups and PR Campaigns

by Dory Hippauf on October 23, 2012

Just as the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) has its front groups and PR campaigns, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has a few of its own.

The IPAA is a trade association.

The Independent Petroleum Association of America is the national association representing the thousands of independent crude oil and natural gas explorer/producers in the United States. It also operates in close cooperation with 44 unaffiliated independent national, state and regional associations, which together represent thousands of royalty owners and the companies which provide services and supplies to the domestic industry.

For more on IPAA’s “dots” – see: Energy-in-Depth (EID) “GAS”roots.

The American Petroleum Institute (API), is the largest trade association for the oil and gas industry, claiming to represent around 400 corporations engaged in oil production, extraction (including hydrofracking), distribution, and other aspects of the industry.

The Center for Liquefied Natural Gas (CLNG)’s website is registered to API.

President of CLNG is William “Bill” Cooper.    Cooper was a partner in Hunton & Williams.  Prior to joining Hunton & Williams, he served as counsel to the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee. Bill was a drafter and lead negotiator for the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002 and was also a lead negotiator for the House on several provisions of the national energy policy bills in the 107th and 108th Congresses. Earlier in his career, he was general counsel for a natural gas utility company.

Next on the API list is Energy Citizens.  The website is not showing it is registered to API, however if you scroll down the page, in faint and fuzzy text, you will see “supported by the American Petroleum Institute”.

Energy Nation (EN) has a flag-waving, cue up the National Anthem PR approach.  The website is all red, white and blue.   EN describes itself as “Energy Nation brings together the hard-working people of America’s oil and natural gas industry to ensure our voices are heard by our nation’s policymakers. We are the employees, retirees, vendors and suppliers who develop and deliver the energy that fuels the American economy and way of life.”

Energy Tomorrow is where we have PR campaigns hiding behind a PR campaign.

Energy Tomorrow and three of the “affiliated”  projects are registered to the API.

Here are links to the “affiliates”.

Side Notes: Hunton & Williams use to represent Phillip Morris  “The firm garnered attention” in 2007, “when its lawyers argued that the Clean Air Act does not give EPA the right to regulate carbon dioxide in the controversial Supreme Court case Massachusetts v. EPA.”

Per Sourcewatch: Hunton & William is also a major lobbying force, with lobbying income of more than $2.8 million in 2010. Among its biggest lobbying clients are energy firms: Energy Future Holdings (formerly TXU Corp.), Southern Company, Gas Processors Association, FirstEnergy, and Koch Industries. Also among the firm’s lobbying clients are Duke Energy and Progress Energy, and Americans for Affordable Climate Policy, a front group formed by Duke Energy and other coal utilities.
