    If service is not good, talk to the manager or even the server about it. It may feel awkward, but it is better for them to know what they did wrong (so they may try to improve) than to just think you are a cheapskate.

I used to be a server at iHop, 2003 – 04, and base hourly pay was $3.15. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a job more but the pressure to “have a good night” and take home at least $100 cash was sometimes too much. It’s not the kind of job that was meant to be long term but some people have made careers out of it. So please tip at least 15%…AT LEAST!

They have fashion and interior design programs there, and both need resources. It’s also tax deductable. Just give them an idea of how much the supplies are worth in writing and they’ll send you a receipt. The teacher I worked with was super-nice. Came out to the parking lot to get the boxes since I had a baby in the car and everything.

For a long time the design of reel mowers only allowed them to be effective on short, fine bladed grasses like hybrid bermuda. There are recently some design innovations that will allow them to be used on taller, coarser grasses like St. Augustine. Fiskars is one company with this new design. I have not tried one yet, but supposedly they work well.

On every occasion they will frequently travel above the horizon into the air and change colors. I have read the headlights explanation which is based on placing a vehicle along the road and flashing its lights along with traffic frequency along the road. This does not explain all of the phenomena that I have observed.

This is the only explanation I’ve heard that makes sense, heard from a geologist in the area many years ago. That region is slightly geographically active. There’s also a lot of quartz in the ground. The motion and pressures cause a lot of static electricity, and what we see is basically lightning from the ground. I don’t know why it doesn’t make noise like regular lightning.

If you stop in the evening for a few minutes at the Marfa Lights viewing area outside of Marfa along the highway to Alpine you will find yourself among numerous Marfa Lights tourists looking south over the desert to the hills and beyond. As the evening gets darker the hills effectively become invisible in the darkness.

Every know and then a whitish light will come snaking down through the “invisible” hills, disappearing and re-appearing, at which times numerous Lights tourists exclaim “Look! I see the Marfa Lights!” when all they’re seeing are the headlights of cars and trucks in the distance traveling north to Marfa on the highway from Presidio/Ojinaga, with their headlights seeming to disappear when seen from a distance as the vehicles encounter low spots in the roadway or curves behind hills, then magically re-appearing when emerging from behind these view obstructions. The visibility of these lights depends significantly on local atmospheric conditions (i. e. smog, fog, dust or other haziness).

I think the gullibility of so many such viewers requires more explanation than do such reported sightings of the “Marfa Lights”. As to whether there are other luminous phenomena in the same area that do not abide such straightforward explanation, I suppose many things are possible but in this case they have escaped reputable, rational, intelligent and experienced documentation.

Regarding why there are seven days in a week: Not positive, but I strongly suspect it has to do with the 28-day lunar cycle and 7-day increments will mark the quarters. This would have been very important in agriculture and a consistent way to mark the passage of time.

Re: Wakame question: You can also find wakame (and other types of seaweed) at Central Market. They sell packages of already cut wakame that you just need to soak in some water before adding to soups, etc. The selection is not as extensive as an Asian grocery store but if Central Market is closer to where you live it can save you an extra trip to the Asian market.

Offer it up to FreeCycle or FreebieCycle, where things are exchanged free-of-charge. To keep it safe (not re-used as a crib), don’t give away the hardware; keep the nuts & bolts separate. Some imagination will give that crib a new, safe life. Cheers!

Political scientists (I am one and have taught about political conflict for decades) do not agree about this, so it is not very clear cut especially the definitions of revolution.However, a civil war is definitely a war between opposing groups within a political system (between government and rebels, between competing party or ethnic or ideological factions seeking control of the state). It’s not a perfect fix, but making sure those pipes are wrapped in insulation will help, depending on how often you ask for the hot water. (Only 501-c3′s are allowed)

I prefer mixes, for genetic stability. I found my two Irish Wolfhound mixes this way! It took many searches over some months to find the right fit. But Golden Retrievers and many other breeds are available easily, all the time.

They do not take non-Parkland employees for these positions any longer. When I lived in Canada I was with the Red Cross’s disaster response team for years. Does anyone know of any other organizations or clinics that may need a volunteer who has experience in the emergency response / medical field?

The extra lights under the deck park are to bring the light level during DAYTIME hours high enough so drivers can see clearly. The human eye takes a few moments to adjust to low light levels and accidents could occur. They don’t use all the lights at night, because it would be too bright.

Joe, I took the computer apart and removed the hard drive. It is easy as one side of the computer opens up and just unscrew a couple screws and unplug the cables (2 of them) and pull the hdd out. I then took a hammer and bashed the heck out of the drive and placed the remains back inside and put the cover back on the computer and dropped it off at BestBuy. They take all computer and electronics for recycling.

You can download free programs that can erase all of your personal information in such away that it is not recoverable. These programs overwrite your files with zeros and ones several times so that none of your information or its traces are left. Sometimes your existing anti virus program will have the “erase or wipe clean or shredder” feature that will also allow you to do this. You should be able to download a safe freeware program to do this from a safe site such as download.cnet.com. Hope that helps.

Regarding the KERA world channel dissapearing. I suspect that the caller has an antenna for the digital signal (for those without cable). They should go into the menu on their TV and autoprogram their channels again. Occassionaly a signal will be lost and the TV will not recognize.

My husband passed away 2 years ago and he left a Will but I did not have it probated because we did not have enough assets so that it would not be feasible to have it probated. My question is that both out cars were in both names but can I have the title changed to my name only without having to probate the will. The cars are both old (10 yrs) but would like to sell them.

You can – call the motor vehicle folks – there is a fee you have to pay to transfer the title, is what I was told by a friend in a similar situation. Also, you don’t need an attorney to probate the will, is my understanding. Do a search on probate in Texas (each state is different) and find out what is required. You would file it with the County Clerk, I think. Check all of this – I’ve dealt with these issues in the past but you need current sources.

You can make your own or buy a brand name, Victor Ant and Roach spray, in an aerosol can which I prefer simply because it spays evenly. If you spray it along door frames, windows and any gaps where pipes enter the house, the ants and even scorpions won’t enter the house. It’s also a good idea to keep the sink and tub drains closed or stoppered when they are not in use as scorpions will crawl up the drain and enter the house that way.

Are there any organizations in Dallas who spay/neuter feral dogs? What about a feral dog rescue? I am feeding a small pack of dogs in a warehouse district in Oak Cliff and want to help these poor animals. City of Dallas animal control will euthanize them if they catch them. Also, one dog in the pack has a severe injury. Are there any kind hearted vets who might help this dog?

Sadly, there are not a lot of resources for feral dogs, since so many tame, friendly, and healthy dogs are also unhomed in today’s economy. Some rescue groups will help trap, and a few organizations may help with discounted vet care, but it helps to have a permanent home lined up first. If you or a co-worker is willing to keep the dogs once rescued, that will aid finding a place to help.

Unlike cats, dogs cannot live well as ferals, even with support of people. They don’t have much stealth. Cats can be introduced to a TNR program, and many places support this. For dogs, it is much worse. Even altered dogs who have had shots and are being fed are going to have a rough time, what with weather, traffic, and the dynamics of pack behavior.

Are there any organizations in Dallas who spay/neuter feral dogs? What about a feral dog rescue? I am feeding a small pack of dogs in a warehouse district in Oak Cliff and want to help these poor animals. City of Dallas animal control will euthanize them if they catch them. Also, one dog in the pack has a severe injury. Are there any kind hearted vets who might help this dog?

Sadly, there are not a lot of resources for feral dogs, since so many tame, friendly, and healthy dogs are also unhomed in today’s economy. Some rescue groups will help trap, and a few organizations may help with discounted vet care, but it helps to have a permanent home lined up first. If you or a co-worker is willing to keep the dogs once rescued, that will aid finding a place to help.

Unlike cats, dogs cannot live well as ferals, even with support of people. They don’t have much stealth. Cats can be introduced to a TNR program, and many places support this. For dogs, it is much worse. Even altered dogs who have had shots and are being fed are going to have a rough time, what with weather, traffic, and the dynamics of pack behavior.

You can search your area, specifying age, breed, size, gender, and other characteristics you are seeking. All animals will come up that match, usually with pictures and descriptions, as well as contact information for the non-profit organization that is offering them for adoption. (Only 501-c3′s are allowed)

I prefer mixes, for genetic stability. I found my two Irish Wolfhound mixes this way! It took many searches over some months to find the right fit. But Golden Retrievers and many other breeds are available easily, all the time.

While driving, I sometimes see extremely reckless and dangerous drivers. I’ve seen motorcyclists racing each other or squeezing between two cars. I was almost hit once when I somehow got in the middle of what appeared to be an impromptu, diesel truck race between about a dozen trucks. I’ve also seen drivers that appear to be drunk, holding open cans of beer on my morning commute. My question is this: what can I do about it? Who do I call when I see other drivers putting others at risk? I called a local police station and was told, rather vaguely, that I could call 911 if I thought I needed to. I’d like a more definitive answer, if someone has one. Thanks!

I always call 911, even about kids in the back of a pickup. They seem to appreciate the call….because they, not a local pd, get the calls when horrible accidents happen.

Call 911, but realize that usually by the time the call gets dispatched, usually under a minute if a unit is available, a vehicle traveling 60 miles per hour is a mile down the road. Police are assigned geography into “Beats”. The call is given to the beat car, which may be on the far side of the beat, say two miles away, He would have to drive 120 miles per hour to be where the vehicle was when you called, Additionally, freeways in the Dallas Ft Worth are cross jurisdictions rapidly, thus causing the call to be handed off to another Police Dept. Also understand that most of what you are witnessing is a class c misdemeanor, thus lowering the priority when there are felony or violent crimes being called in at the same time. The best thing you can do is drive defensively, don’t get tied up in a road rage incident, and be a good witness. It it is a drunk driver, stay on the line with 911, follow at a safe distance and DO NOT speed or violate any other traffic laws to follow..

How do I keep them away? I don’t have a body of stagnating water by my house, lots of oak trees but still…we simply dread going outside. Please help.

2. Even a tiny amount of water, like a dish or old tire can be a breeding ground. If someone has an automatic sprinkler, and a dish or flower pot holds water, that’s enough. Ask neighbors if they are having the same problems.
3. I have heard you can spray a mix of water and lemon dish-washing soap on plants and trees and it discourages them but does not hurt plants
4. Drinking apple cider vinegar is said to change your pH balance and discourage them somewhat.
5. OFF helps. I’d be more worried about a deadly virus than chemicals this year.

i asked about books with characters like MacGyver a few weeks back, and someone recommended Clive Cussler’s series on Dirk Pitt. i bought one, and really liked it, but it wasn’t exactly what i am looking for. i will continue reading the books by Cussler to get a better feel, though… i may be asking for too much, as maybe there is only one MacGyver (lol), but i am really hoping to find a character who can improvise with what is around them, who is perhaps a survivalist, and thinks quickly on their feet. mullet isn’t required! with the collective knowledge in the area, i am hoping to find what i am looking for.

For the person who wanted good unbiased books about Mormonism, I highly recommend “No Man Knows My History” by Fawn Brodie. A very thoroughly researched, annotated and fascinating biography of Joseph Smith. Both authoritative and a ripping good read.

When you’ve made enough rolls place them in a cooking pot, cover it and boil until rice inside rolls is edible. For the meat, you can precook or place raw into the rice mix. It will steam so make sure to add water whenever the water level drops below the surface. Hope that helps.

Since fire ants are an invasive species, there is no reason to spare them. “In fact, the much gentler native Texas ants have almost been wiped out by fire ants. If you have the huge black or red kind, you might consider sparing them and be glad you don’t have fire ants.

You can also put them on Freecycle or free on Craigslist.
These days, some decorators use them, but only the ones with a certain look….those from the 70′s and later usually get recycled. Some people use them in art and craft projects where many printed pages are needed.

I’m hoping that someone might be able to help me find the title of a book that I read as a kid back in the early-to-mid 70′s. It was a Sci-Fi story that had the following plot line:

A kid’s dad is working on some secret project in a Govt Lab when whole blocks of the city begin to disappear. It is quickly determined that this is not the work of the Govt Lab, but from a mysterious force from another dimension. In some series of events, the kid eventually ends up in the other dimension and discovers that the work his dad is doing is causing major catastrophic disasters in that alternate universe. In an attempt to stop the disasters, the folks from the other dimension were trying to capture the source of the disruptions by trying to “beam” the Govt Lab over to their side, but their aim
wasn’t very accurate. In the end, the kid returns home; notifies his dad of the issue; the lab stops the secret project and all live happily ever after.

The real twist to the story is in the final paragraphs when the kid’s dad asks what it was like in the alternate universe. The kid replied that it was basically the same as their world, except that in the alternate universe the Americans actually won their war of
independence from England.

I’ve been looking on the internet for months to find the title of this book, but have not had any success. I hope someone out there in the KERA websphere will have the answer or maybe a couple of clues that I can key off of.

I was reading about the comments about wait staff pay and about talking to the manager or wait person if the service is not good. I try to remember to also speak to the manager if the service is really good. I “complain” about the person doing such a good job that they cost me money because I just have to leave an extra amount for the tip! I “complain” about the person doing such a good job that they cost me money because I just have to leave an extra amount for the tip! I have been to Cuba twice; via Cancun the first time and via Mexico City the second time. You can request that Cuban immigration NOT stamp your passport and they usually will oblige. You must clear customs in Mexico twice and that is the only thing that will cause any trouble. If you have a new “chipped” passport, US immigration will possibly be alerted, but they are generally not looking for Cuban tourists. Keep a low profile and do not use a US credit card. I am with an organization that is holding an event to help raise money/donations for The Samaritan Inn (homeless shelter) located in Mckinney. In order to do so we need to obtain some free cardboard boxes and preferably large cardboard boxes. Does anyone know somewhere that we could get those?

I’d like to know about the current state of police scanners. I had an uncle who had one going for years and we used to sell scanners and frequency lists at Radio Shack. I always did like to know what is happening in my community.

1. Is there anything to hear or have police and fire units gone to encrypted systems?

2. Is it still legal to listen in?

3. Are scanners still available?

I’m thinking of of putting up an outdoor antenna but am concerned about it being a draw for lightning. I live in a wooded area with 80-100 foot trees located about fifty feet in every direction. I have lost several pieces of equipment because lightning has hit the trees and then traveled through the ground to the house so don’t want to make matters worse as I live in an area that gets a lot of severe storms. So my question is, which would the lightning most likely hit first, the trees or a metal antenna?

Lenox rep says Trane is now made by the Chinese so it’s not as good. Looks like other companies products are made in Korea.

Maytag is little known but seems to get high ratings.

What is the best bang for the buck for a 3 or 3.5 ton system.

My Trane lasted 25 years but had a hard time keeping things cool in 100 degree weather.

As an aside, copyrighting a single composition incurs the same fee as copyrighting a “body of works”…good info for any budding songwriters looking to register their music. If you have multiple compositions, save some $$ and publish them together as a “body of works”.
