The inability to get individual golf clubs doesn’t make any sense. Considering the number of angered golfers that wrap clubs around trees and snap them over thighs, you’d think they’d go broke buying full sets of clubs. And would they really just hang on to all those incomplete sets?

Hi Jeff – The gentleman who called in regarding the wage of Wait Staff.  Currently is the hourly wage is $2.12 and a half cents. The majority of their salary is paid by you the customer! So, please everyone if you receive service that is good or better, leave 18 to 20%. Thank You Dallas!!!
    BTW – I am not a server.

Used to be, but 20% is now customary for a good job.

        • Chrystal in Oak Cliff

Cost of living has increased, but the wage base has not. I tend to tip 20%.

If service is not good, talk to the manager or even the server about it. It may feel awkward, but it is better for them to know what they did wrong (so they may try to improve) than to just think you are a cheapskate.

    • Thomas Mwangi

I used to be a server at iHop, 2003 – 04, and base hourly pay was $3.15. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a job more but the pressure to “have a good night” and take home at least $100 cash was sometimes too much. It’s not the kind of job that was meant to be long term but some people have made careers out of it. So please tip at least 15%…AT LEAST!

For years I had wished that there’s a show like this; now, moved to Dallas just last month, I can’t believe there it is!

For starter: Please send the words out to charity org. that send people address labels.  I’ve gotten thousands of them through the years and they keep sending.  Consider how few people write letters these days, this is such a waste.

I didn’t hear if there was an answer to places to donate sewing supplies, patterns and fabrics, but I recently donated to Berkner high school.  They have fashion and interior design programs there, and both need resources.  It’s also tax deductable.  Just give them an idea of how much the supplies are worth in writing and they’ll send you a receipt. The teacher I worked with was super-nice.  Came out to the parking lot to get the boxes since I had a baby in the car and everything.

I recently heard of a place where abandoned bikes were sold in the Dallas Fort Worth area.  However, I was unable to write it down as I was driving at the time.  I’m wondering if anyone out there knows when, where, or a website where I can get that info.

    • Jim

I’m really interested in picking up abandoned bikes, too. I’ve never been able to get a better answer than the place on Harry Hines on Thursdays. Nothing like the surplus I hoped for, it was more like an abandoned pawn shop.
U-North Texas has a surplus everything sale on Tuesdays. Includes bikes. http://pps.unt.edu/content/public-saleThey’re open on Tuesdays 9-1.

I work at the University of North Texas. At the end of each semester, abandoned bikes are sold as part of UNT’s public sales. Here’s a link to their web site: http://pps.unt.edu/surplus-gallery/Public%20Sale Other universities may do something similar.

There is a local Dallas charity called Spokes for Folks.  We take donated bikes and rebuild them for organizations to distribute to people who need bikes and can’t afford them.  You can drop your bikes off at many of the bike stores in the area.  Check our website for a list of bike shops.  www.spokesforfolks.org

how does the U.S. compare to other countries regarding the percentage of it’s population  incarcerated?  How does Texas compare in the US?

Regarding the number of years or months courts  give as punishment for various crimes, such as drug related crimes – is there a scientific or studied  basis for this?  (such as studies that would show less  recidivism  based on specific length of time incarcerated, or is it just made up?

For a long time the design of reel mowers only allowed them to be effective on short, fine bladed grasses like hybrid bermuda.  There are recently some design innovations that will allow them to be used on taller, coarser grasses like St. Augustine.  Fiskars is one company with this new design.  I have not tried one yet, but supposedly they work well.

What’s the deal with bike-riders running red lights and stop signs?  Thought they faced the same rules as automobile drivers.

    • Jim

In Texas law, bicycles are vehicles, just like cars. But it’s a lot harder to start from a full stop on a bike, and many drivers don’t recognize bikes as vehicles. It’s a toss-up on safety, energy, and time for most riders, who will slow down a lot and put a foot down in case we need to stop fully. Many riders are very rude and just blow through a stop, but many also watch the traffic around us, it’s our lives at stake.

Re Marfa Lights.   I don’t buy the car headlights explanation.  I have seen the Marfa Lights several times.  On every occasion they will frequently travel above the horizon into the air and change colors.  I have read the headlights explanation which is based on placing a vehicle along the road and flashing its lights along with traffic frequency along the road.  This does not explain all of the phenomena that I have observed.

    • Jim

This is the only explanation I’ve heard that makes sense, heard from a geologist in the area many years ago. That region is slightly geographically active. There’s also a lot of quartz in the ground. The motion and pressures cause a lot of static electricity, and what we see is basically lightning from the ground. I don’t know why it doesn’t make noise like regular lightning.

    • Ed in Arlington

If you stop in the evening for a few minutes at the Marfa Lights viewing area outside of Marfa along the highway to Alpine you will find yourself among numerous Marfa Lights tourists looking south over the desert to the hills and beyond. As the evening gets darker the hills effectively become invisible in the darkness.

Every know and then a whitish light will come snaking down through the “invisible” hills, disappearing and re-appearing, at which times numerous Lights tourists exclaim “Look! I see the Marfa Lights!” when all they’re seeing are the headlights of cars and trucks in the distance traveling north to Marfa on the highway from Presidio/Ojinaga, with their headlights seeming to disappear when seen from a distance as the vehicles encounter low spots in the roadway or curves behind hills, then magically re-appearing when emerging from behind these view obstructions. The visibility of these lights depends significantly on local atmospheric conditions (i. e. smog, fog, dust or other haziness).

I think the gullibility of so many such viewers requires more explanation than do such reported sightings of the “Marfa Lights”. As to whether there are other luminous phenomena in the same area that do not abide such straightforward explanation, I suppose many things are possible but in this case  they have escaped reputable, rational, intelligent and experienced documentation.

    • Minnie in Frisco

I grew up in Marfa and for years people have been trying to figure out what they are.  Just a freak of nature I say.  Very cool to look at when they do show up.

On the road, along with white and yellow markers, I see blue markers too. Why TXDOT put blue marker on the road and what it implies?
One thing I can think of is I mostly see blue markers near the intersection but I have also seen them at places which is not near the intersection.

Regarding why 7 days in a week — it is not always that way. Here is from Wikipedia

The term “week” is sometimes expanded to refer to other time units
comprising a few days. Such “weeks” of between four and ten days have
been used historically in various places.[1] Intervals longer than 10 days are not usually termed “weeks” as they are closer in length to the fortnight or the month than to the seven-day week.

In some Russian systems a week was 5 days

Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus Octavianus (Augustus) is buried in a mausoleum built near the Tiber on the northern edge of what was then called the Campus Martius.  You can still see it, although it is somewhat overgrown and unkempt.  It is near his restored Ara Pacis (Altar of Peace).  It is worth a visit.  As for other Imperator/Caesar I do not know.

Regarding why there are seven days in a week:  Not positive, but I strongly suspect it has to do with the 28-day lunar cycle and 7-day increments will mark the quarters.  This would have been very important in agriculture and a consistent way to mark the passage of time.

Back in the early 1980s there was a song that played on the radio about the Dallas Cowboys. I just found that it is called “Sunday Cowboy” by John Welch Forbes (I think) and it’s from Odessa Records. I’m looking to find this. So far the only thing I can find for it is from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQXwoU45IAw Any one know if this is available still?

Re: Wakame question: You can also find wakame (and other types of seaweed) at Central Market. They sell packages of already cut wakame that you just need to soak in some water before adding to soups, etc. The selection is not as extensive as an Asian grocery store but if Central Market is closer to where you live it can save you an extra trip to the Asian market.

Cows and other herd animals sometimes align themselves to the magnetic field (pointing magnetic north or magnetic south) of the Earth as well. There was a scientific study done showing this is 2008.

Howdy!  To recycle baby cribs: take it apart, use the slatted sides as trellis (morning glories, any trailing vine), the end pieces can be used for support pieces in the garden, or as signage (tape the garage sale or Happy Holidays banners to it), hang a wreath on it, draw pictures on it – all kinds of ways to re-use it. Offer it up to FreeCycle or FreebieCycle, where things are exchanged free-of-charge.  To keep it safe (not re-used as a crib), don’t give away the hardware; keep the nuts & bolts separate.  Some imagination will give that crib a new, safe life.  Cheers!

Re difference between civil war and revolution. Political scientists (I am one and have taught about political conflict for decades) do not agree about this, so it is not very clear cut especially the definitions of revolution. However, a civil war is definitely a war between opposing groups within a political system (between government and rebels, between competing party or ethnic or ideological factions seeking control of the state). A revolution may and often does include civil war.  Revolution is generally associated with an extensive change in the political system (rulers+rules of the game+coalition supporting the regime+ political myths). It may come about through civil war, a coup (seizure of ruling power) or even nonviolently (e.g., election, as in much of E. Europe after the Soviets pulled out c. 1990).

I think a “zip car” might fulfill my need to have a car available for a few hours or a trip to Fort Worth on a Sunday, when no TRE service is available.  Has anyone used a zip car?

Also, my house has bathrooms that are on oppositie sides of the house.  The bathrooms closest to the water heater have hot water almost immediatetly, while the water in the other bathroom
and the kitchen, as well, haveto run for almost 5 minutes to heat up.  Any suggestion for correcting this problem?        Lewis      in Richardson

The water waiting in the pipes between the heater and the faucets cools down. It’s not a perfect fix, but making sure those pipes are wrapped in insulation will help, depending on how often you ask for the hot water. I use my “unwanted” cold water at times like that to water house plants and the pets.

Loved Jeff’s answer to the gentleman seeking a breeder for Golden Retrievers! I just happened to be on my way to the shelter to adopt a dog as I listened to his suggestion to visit local animal adoption centers or rescue group websites! Thanks, Jeff!! I would like to spread news of two that are located more westerly – towards MY side of the Metroplex: Arlington Animal Shelter, Hwy 360, exit Kingswood/Green Oaks, west to 1000 SE Green Oaks. Thru Jan. 2 they are offering 2-for-1 deal: $45 which includes the spay/neuter & microchips for 2 animals! A brand, new adoption partnership between City of Ft. Worth and PetSmart at the Alliance Town Center store, 2901 Texas Sage Tr. Only $24.50 adoption fee thru Dec. 24!!

    • Chrystal in Oak Cliff

Agree! For anyone seeking a specific breed, the best resource is Petfinder.com.

You can search your area, specifying age, breed, size, gender, and other characteristics you are seeking. All animals will come up that match, usually with pictures and descriptions, as well as contact information for the non-profit organization that is offering them for adoption. (Only 501-c3′s are allowed)

I prefer mixes, for genetic stability. I found my two Irish Wolfhound mixes this way! It took many searches over some months to find the right fit. But Golden Retrievers and many other breeds are available easily, all the time.

The extra lights under the deck park are to bring the light level during DAYTIME hours high enough so drivers can see clearly.   The human eye takes a few moments to adjust to low light levels and accidents could occur.  They don’t use all the lights at night, because it would be too bright.

Joe, I took the computer apart and removed the hard drive. It is easy as one side of the computer opens up and just unscrew a couple screws and unplug the cables (2 of them)  and pull the hdd out. I then took a hammer and bashed the heck out of the drive and placed the remains back inside  and put the cover back on the computer and dropped it off at BestBuy. They take all computer and electronics for recycling.

       Joe,

You can download free programs that can erase all of your personal information in such away that it is not recoverable. These programs overwrite your files with zeros and ones several times so that none of your information or its traces are left. Sometimes your existing anti virus program will have the “erase or wipe clean or shredder” feature that will also allow you to do this. You should be able to download a safe freeware program to do this from a safe site such as download.cnet.com. Hope that helps.

Regarding the KERA world channel dissapearing.  I suspect that the caller has an antenna for the digital signal (for those without cable).  They should go into the menu on their TV and autoprogram their channels again.  Occassionaly a signal will be lost and the TV will not recognize.

Last year the Dallas Morning News ran an article in the Art/Life section about a garden that owned privately, but open to the public.  It is in the middle of a North Dallas neighborhood, very unsuspecting.  I can’t find the name of it anywhere….can anyone help?

The ISS is in orbit and is never seen in the same spot in the sky. You can track the station at this link http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/tracking/ and even get email or Twitter alerts about when it’s visible over our area. Periodically it can be seen, briefly, in the DFW area.

For the person asking about the star in the sky, it’s not the space station.  It’s Venus and not far from it is Jupiter.  All Things considered did a segment on this last week or the week before.

As far-fetched as the question (about basketball making players taller) sounds we know that many of our genes are switched off until needed, and then switched on when the appropriate stimulus appears; e.g. wound healing, muscle hypertrophy in weight lifters.  So it wouldn’t be unreasonable to discover some day that by stretching or stimulating the body to be taller some genes that would make us grow taller wouldn’t be turned on.  Did the giraffe make itself taller?
Of course, the blue print is in the DNA.  You can only do what the DNA has the potential to do.

You probably are not going to like this answer Ree, when a part of my barbers tree fell on his neighbors house his neighbor tried to get his(my barber) insurance company to take care of it. The insurance agent said my barbers insurance covers his home only and that the neighbor had to take care of the clean up on their property and contact their homeowners insurance for any of the damage on their property. Perhaps you will want to contact your insurance company with a hypothetical question just to see what he or she says on the matter…

To cool some computer/telepne/cable under gound?
Who tends to them DOT, City, State, Feds or Private?

Nitrogen is used to pressurize the jackets surrounding some telephone and data cables that have had a previous history of water infiltation. Dry gas under pressure inside the insulation keeps the ground water fromforing its way through tiny pinholes.

    Hi Jeff,
I was wondering if anyone could answer this.  I’ve noticed Samsung Network vans around my neighborhood in Richardson.  They usually have an antenna extended pretty high up in the air.  What are they doing and/or why are they there?  I tried asking them once and got a “get lost” kind of response.

My husband passed away 2 years ago and he left a Will but I did not have it probated because we did not have enough assets so that it would not be feasible to have it probated.  My question is that both out cars were in both names but can I have the title changed to my name only without having to probate the will.  The cars are both old (10 yrs) but would like to sell them.

    • guest

You can – call the motor vehicle folks – there is a fee you have to pay to transfer the title, is what I was told by a friend in a similar situation. Also, you don’t need an attorney to probate the will, is my understanding. Do a search on probate in Texas (each state is different) and find out what is required. You would file it with the County Clerk, I think. Check all of this – I’ve dealt with these issues in the past but you need current sources.

I have an answer for the sugar ants and possibly the scorpions. Peppermint oil works really well on ants, roaches and scorpions yet is safe around pets and children. You can make your own or buy a brand name, Victor Ant and Roach spray, in an aerosol can which I prefer simply because it spays evenly. If you spray it along door frames, windows and any gaps where pipes enter the house, the ants and even scorpions won’t enter the house. It’s also a good idea to keep the sink and tub drains closed or stoppered when they are not in use as scorpions will crawl up the drain and enter the house that way.

    • Chrystal in Oak Cliff

Roaches really hate catnip, and that repels them well. I have not seen any studies on ants or scorpions, though. Essential oil of catnip lasts a long time.

There is a resale shop near White Rock that benefits animals – something like Second Chance resale or a similar name.  I’ve heard before that they accept just about any kind of cloth.  What can’t be re-sold gets turned into rags, etc. for various purposes.

In response to the lady who is looking for a place to drop off her glass bottles: The City of Fort Worth has 3 drop off stations for recycling. You can go to http://fortworthtexas.gov/solidwaste/dropoff/ for the addresses. The drop off sites are available to homeowners & apartment dwellers but if you are dropping off a large amount of glass from a business you’d better check with the City of Fort Worth on how to properly do that. You can call 817-392-EASY (3279) or email trash@fortworthtexas.gov for more information.

    The origin of the
term bar is from the barring furniture dividing a medieval European
courtroom, the Public side from the Court side.

    In most courts,
the bar is represented by a physical partition: a railing or barrier
    that serves as a bar.

So ‘Going before (or in front of) the bar’ was to go from the public side
of the railing to the restricted ‘Court’ side of the railing.

    Being ‘Called
to the bar’ was to be called to the
bar or railing to give witness or testimony.

So the Bar Association refers to a group of people who have regular business
and allowed ‘in front of the Bar’.

I don’t think anyone has ever noticed this, but every time I water my trees and lawn, the water sometimes gets on the concrete. About a minute later, I start hearing this buzzing noise, as if there are microscopic animals in there. Thanks! :)

    • Chrystal in Oak Cliff

Buzzing can be the sound of steam, if it is very hot. Reducing water pressure can allow more water to slowly soak in to the soil and not flow onto pavement.

Hi Jeff – Like many people, almost all the music I purchase now is via digital download, usually on iTunes.  I’m really curious about the preview snippets a user can play to hear a portion of a song, usually 30 seconds or one minute. Does anyone know who or what selects the portion of the song that is previewed? I imagine it would be desirable to include the song’s chorus or the hook of the song to make it more appealing to prospective buyers but with the volume of individual songs, it seems a pretty daunting task to review and determine the catchiest parts of each and every one of them.  Do the record companies select the snippets or could this be done through some kind of software?  Thanks! – James

If this is actually the album she is looking for, I own it.  I’d love to get it converted to digital for my own use, and would be willing to sell the original if I had it digitally.  I don’t have a record player, so I haven’t heard it in years to know if it has held up.

Are there any organizations in Dallas who spay/neuter feral dogs? What about a feral dog rescue? I am feeding a small pack of dogs in a warehouse district in Oak Cliff and want to help these poor animals. City of Dallas animal control will euthanize them if they catch them. Also, one dog in the pack has a severe injury. Are there any kind hearted vets who might help this dog?

    • Chrystal in Oak Cliff

Sadly, there are not a lot of resources for feral dogs, since so many tame, friendly, and healthy dogs are also unhomed in today’s economy. Some rescue groups will help trap, and a few organizations may help with discounted vet care, but it helps to have a permanent home lined up first. If you or a co-worker is willing to keep the dogs once rescued, that will aid finding a place to help.

Unlike cats, dogs cannot live well as ferals, even with support of people. They don’t have much stealth. Cats can be introduced to a TNR program, and many places support this. For dogs, it is much worse. Even altered dogs who have had shots and are being fed are going to have a rough time, what with weather, traffic, and the dynamics of pack behavior.

To quickly locate non-profits in your area, go to Petfinder.com.

If the injury is extremely severe, the suffering may be great. Dogs and other animals tend to mask their pain, and try to look “normal” to be less vulnerable to predation. If the dog is truly wild, treatment might be terrifying to him or her, and a gentle euthanasia by people who care about animals might be the most merciful thing.

We found some old copper printing plates in our attic. They are pure copper, and quite heavy. We’re told they are more valuable as scrap metal than as printing memorabilia. Where would we sell them in the DFW area? We are in the Denton areal

    • http://www.facebook.com/samra.jones.bufkins Samra Jones Bufkins

Many people called in to the show to suggest these had historical value. They don’t–they were for a corporate newsletter/magazine, and I’ve already checked on their historical value. I did give a couple to a graphic design teacher as examples to show his class, but want to get rid of the rest of them.

      • C Hays

          you
can consign items like the printing plates at a local auction house.
The one I frequent is Miles Autry Auctioneers in Garland. They have a
        website MilesAurtyAuctioneers.com,
and many collectors and people with antique stores and shops attend
these live auctions. If they are real treasures, the bidding will prove
it.People there sometimes also bid just on metal value, and they will sell, one way or another.

EBay is another outlet, although that will involve taking pictures, shipping, etc.

I need to know if there is a store that sells filler for bean bag chairs-either shredded foam or the styrofoam beads.  I have found websites that sell them but the shipping is as much as the foam.

Cost of living has increased, but the wage base has not. I tend to tip 20%.

If service is not good, talk to the manager or even the server about it. It may feel awkward, but it is better for them to know what they did wrong (so they may try to improve) than to just think you are a cheapskate.

Dallas City Council meetings are on Wednesdays during the day.  (You could also check for City Council meetings in Richardson, Frisco, Addison, or other northern suburbs near Plano if you don’t want to drive too far.)  Also try asking your favourite search engine to look up County Commission meetings for Dallas (usually Tuesday mornings) or Collin counties, as well as School Board meetings for the Plano ISD.

While driving, I sometimes see extremely reckless and dangerous drivers. I’ve seen motorcyclists racing each other or squeezing between two cars. I was almost hit once when I somehow got in the middle of what appeared to be an impromptu, diesel truck race between about a dozen trucks. I’ve also seen drivers that appear to be drunk, holding open cans of beer on my morning commute. My question is this: what can I do about it? Who do I call when I see other drivers putting others at risk? I called a local police station and was told, rather vaguely, that I could call 911 if I thought I needed to. I’d like a more definitive answer, if someone has one. Thanks!

    • Chrystal in Oak CLiff

I always call 911, even about kids in the back of a pickup. They seem to appreciate the call….because they, not a local pd, get the calls when horrible accidents happen.

    • Lee

Call 911, but realize that usually by the time the call gets dispatched, usually under a minute if a unit is available, a vehicle traveling 60 miles per hour is a mile down the road. Police are assigned geography into “Beats”. The call is given to the beat car, which may be on the far side of the beat, say two miles away, He would have to drive 120 miles per hour to be where the vehicle was when you called, Additionally, freeways in the Dallas Ft Worth are cross jurisdictions rapidly, thus causing the call to be handed off to another Police Dept. Also understand that most of what you are witnessing is a class c misdemeanor, thus lowering the priority when there are felony or violent crimes being called in at the same time. The best thing you can do is drive defensively, don’t get tied up in a road rage incident, and be a good witness. It it is a drunk driver, stay on the line with 911, follow at a safe distance and DO NOT speed or violate any other traffic laws to follow..

Regarding intruders on the crepe myrtles: Organic landscape designer/lecturer – Lucy Harrell,T.C.N.P., recommends planting a large sunflower at the end of a row of crepe myrtles (but not too close).   They attract the bugs which becomes a buffet, of sorts, for the birds. This works for other areas of your garden as well.  Lucy recently moved outside of Houston, but still holds workshops in the DFW area.

MOSQUITOES: They seem to be horrible this year and my daughter is being eaten alive, even in her bedroom at night. Does anyone have a solution (preferably non-toxic) to this problem? How do I keep them away? I don’t have a body of stagnating water by my house, lots of oak trees but still…we simply dread going outside. Please help.
    Thanks,Carlos

       1. Make sure grass and weeds are mowed.
      2. Even a tiny amount of water, like a dish or old tire can be a breeding ground. If someone has an automatic sprinkler, and a dish or flower pot holds water, that’s enough. Ask neighbors if they are having the same problems.
      3. I have heard you can spray a mix of water and lemon dish-washing soap on plants and trees and it discourages them but does not hurt plants
      4. Drinking apple cider vinegar is said to change your pH balance and discourage them somewhat.
      5. OFF helps. I’d be more worried about a deadly virus than chemicals this year.

You can find whole green coconuts in most Asian grocery stores, specifically Chinese, Vietnamese or Indian grocery stores. The large Asian supermarkets in Arlington, Richardson, Irving or Haltom City are your best bets. You can also try Mexican grocery stores like Fiesta or El Ranchito. If they don’t have them in the produce sections you might find them in the refrigerated or frozen food section.

    hey there anything listeners!
i asked about books with characters like MacGyver a few weeks back, and someone recommended Clive Cussler’s series on Dirk Pitt. i bought one, and really liked it, but it wasn’t exactly what i am looking for. i will continue reading the books by Cussler to get a better feel, though… i may be asking for too much, as maybe there is only one MacGyver (lol), but i am really hoping to find a character who can improvise with what is around them, who is perhaps a survivalist, and thinks quickly on their feet. mullet isn’t required! with the collective knowledge in the area, i am hoping to find what i am looking for.

There are thousands of publishing companies. You may want to research which smaller presses are publishing books in the same genre as yours. Also consider “publishing” online. There are also many online writing clubs and groups where writers discuss this topic. NANOWRIMO is something that might lead you in the right direction.

Crystal’s question: Accutane is very effective for about 10 years against cystic acne, but will cause soft-membrane tissue and sun-sensitivity, i.e. dry nostrils and lips, during treatment period. Works better, more tolerant for men and hardy woman. There is risk of birth defects for women. Treating for general Rosacea, incorporating diet and lifestyle changes may achieve the results you’re looking and at lower cost than Accutane therapy. Accutane should be a last recourse when all else has failed.

AN ANSWER: A couple of weeks ago a caller asked where to hear folk music in Dallas.
Uncle Calvin’s Coffee House (near 75 & Walnut Hill) is celebrating it’s 30th year of hosting acoustic folk music of all kinds. Also KNON radio (89,3 FM) has just started a one hour folk music show airing Tuesday mornings at 7a.m.

Locust and Cicadas are not the same insect. Locust are related to grasshoppers and Cicadas are related to Leafhoppers.
I was in South Texas over the summer, where. I saw and heard many Cicadas in the trees. Perhaps the Cicadas are out of season in the North Texas area.

There is a park in the Lakewood area. It is on Lanewood, on the north side, west of Sunland. A small area, separated from a bigger park by a greenbelt, has swings, picnic tables, and a see saw.

Does a polling place representative have the right to ask me my party affiliation? Last time I voted for President, they asked, and the “Republicans,” and “Democrats” each voted in different sections. Is this allowable? Hmmmm.

I have an answer to the caller yesterday who wanted to know about making Middle Eastern Dulmes. The grape leaves are available in any Middle Eastern retail store. They come in glass jars, but I don’t remember the brand name. As for the filling, use raw rice (needs to be washed and rinsed) add diced tomatoes and diced beef to the rice and any other seasoning for flavor (I personally like cumin and Goya Sazon which also gives the rice a wonderful tinge of orange) then roll your leaves. When you’ve made enough rolls place them in a cooking pot, cover it and boil until rice inside rolls is edible. For the meat, you can precook or place raw into the rice mix. It will steam so make sure to add water whenever the water level drops below the surface. Hope that helps.

In High School back around 1973 I remember reading a story in my English class that was about two bugs having a discussion about the sun. These two bugs only live for 6 hours and they were looking up at the sun and wondering if it was always in the sky. One bug argued that since watching they had seen the sun move in a straight line and if it kept going the sun would go below the horizon. The other bug argued that the sun probably did not always move in a straight line and that it certainly always stayed in the sky because he couldn’t imagine it ever not being in the sky.

As I recall the story was written by Benjamin Franklin and was part of Poor Richard’s Almanac, but I have looked through Poor Richard’s Almanac and cannot find the story. Does anyone know the author of this story and where I can find it?

    Thanks,
    Brian Bruderer

You may want to see if you can locate the teacher, start with the school, or try to find some of your classmates. The school library might have traces. It may have been an excerpt from a longer work of some kind. Could also have been a translation from another language. A good teacher may have gone far to give you memorable stuff to read…and it worked. It reminds me of the Allegory of the Cave by Plato, in some ways.

I’ve got a question about a bbc show i saw about 8-10yrs ago, it was a period drama set around 19th century england. The protagonist was a red-haired woman who was always running away. In one instance she found out she was closely related to her husband so she fled to prevent scandal. The next man she met had a wife who openly had affairs. I’m not sure if th show was a series, but it was reminiscent of ‘Vanity Fair’ or anything by Dickens. I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

    • Becca McCarty

That sounds like Moll Flanders although it’s set earlier than the 19th century. there was an American film version titled ‘Moll Flanders’ and a British ITV TV version titled ‘The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders’, both were originally released in 1996.

Since fire ants are an invasive species, there is no reason to spare them. “In fact, the much gentler native Texas ants have almost been wiped out by fire ants. If you have the huge black or red kind, you might consider sparing them and be glad you don’t have fire ants.

You can also put them on Freecycle or free on Craigslist.
These days, some decorators use them, but only the ones with a certain look….those from the 70′s and later usually get recycled. Some people use them in art and craft projects where many printed pages are needed.

Travellers: It’s a good idea to see if your bank participates in the Global ATM Alliance. Bank account holders can use foreign ATMs without any extra fees. If you are buying something but the card reader does not recognize your magnetic stripe credit card then you can always pay with cash or find a nearby ATM. This has helped me many times when travelling in the UK since I don’t have a chip and PIN card.

Is this the page Jeff Whittington keeps referring listeners to for Q&A? Is there a more organized and useful page for questions that I’m just missing? I’m not trying to be rude, I swear, surely I’m missing something. I think the same two year old question has been on the top of the comments when I was last here about eight months ago, and I keep hearing Jeff say they’re trying to steer people to the Q&A page but it’s hard to search or find anything on this page as it is. I do see newer comments and questions mixed in with the really old ones, but jeez, do people have to go through and read all 238 comments? Please tell me I’m missing the real page. THANKS!

Any recommendations for companies that provide affordable video transfer? I’m trying to transfer about 30 hours of home movies from 8mm video cassettes and miniDV cassettes to DVD. Any info you can provide on about how much this will cost would be appreciated too. Are there any places where you can do it yourself using a company’s equipment? Would that save me money? I live near DFW airport, but will travel throughout DFW area for the right price. Thanks.

I’m hoping that someone might be able to help me find the title of a book that I read as a kid back in the early-to-mid 70′s. It was a Sci-Fi story that had the following plot line:

A kid’s dad is working on some secret project in a Govt Lab when whole blocks of the city begin to disappear. It is quickly determined that this is not the work of the Govt Lab, but from a mysterious force from another dimension. In some series of events, the kid eventually ends up in the other dimension and discovers that the work his dad is doing is causing major catastrophic disasters in that alternate universe. In an attempt to stop the disasters, the folks from the other dimension were trying to capture the source of the disruptions by trying to “beam” the Govt Lab over to their side, but their aim
wasn’t very accurate. In the end, the kid returns home; notifies his dad of the issue; the lab stops the secret project and all live happily ever after.

The real twist to the story is in the final paragraphs when the kid’s dad asks what it was like in the alternate universe. The kid replied that it was basically the same as their world, except that in the alternate universe the Americans actually won their war of
    independence from England.

I’ve been looking on the internet for months to find the title of this book, but have not had any success. I hope someone out there in the KERA websphere will have the answer or maybe a couple of clues that I can key off of.

    Thanks,
    Nick in Mesquite

I’m looking for a few places to buy pork shoulders/boston butt roasts, etc other than Central Market. CM typically prices theirs around $2.50-4/lb and I’m positive that better prices exist in the metroplex, but my local Kroger, etc, is letting me down.

I was reading about the comments about wait staff pay and about talking to the manager or wait person if the service is not good. I try to remember to also speak to the manager if the service is really good. I “complain” about the person doing such a good job that they cost me money because I just have to leave an extra amount for the tip! Managers and servers also need to know what they are doing right!

I have been to Cuba twice; via Cancun the first time and via Mexico City the second time. You can request that Cuban immigration NOT stamp your passport and they usually will oblige. You must clear customs in Mexico twice and that is the only thing that will cause any trouble. If you have a new “chipped” passport, US immigration will possibly be alerted, but they are generally not looking for Cuban tourists. Keep a low profile and do not use a US credit card. You may contact via email if you want further info.

I am with an organization that is holding an event to help raise money/donations for The Samaritan Inn (homeless shelter) located in Mckinney. In order to do so we need to obtain some free cardboard boxes and preferably large cardboard boxes. Does anyone know somewhere that we could get those?

I’d like to know about the current state of police scanners. I had an uncle who had one going for years and we used to sell scanners and frequency lists at Radio Shack. I always did like to know what is happening in my community.

    1. Is there anything to hear or have police and fire units gone to encrypted systems?

    2. Is it still legal to listen in?

    3. Are scanners still available?

Sherlock is supposed to air this fall but that isn’t firm. They started filming in March and IMDB lists the air date for the first of three episodes as September 15, 2013. However Martin Freeman, who plays Watson, said recently that he thought the first episode would air in December or January. The good news is they have signed up to do a season four of Sherlock, or series four as the Brits call it.

I’m thinking of of putting up an outdoor antenna but am concerned about it being a draw for lightning. I live in a wooded area with 80-100 foot trees located about fifty feet in every direction. I have lost several pieces of equipment because lightning has hit the trees and then traveled through the ground to the house so don’t want to make matters worse as I live in an area that gets a lot of severe storms. So my question is, which would the lightning most likely hit first, the trees or a metal antenna?

Jeff, The answer to Joan’s side walk question is the side walk is the homeowners to the parkway. That was the bad news but the good news is the City of Dallas has a program allowing the homeowner to get the side walk replaced at less than half the cost. We replaced 59′ at a cost of $475 under the program. Check the City website. Liability is to the curb but I suggest checking with your insurance agent.

Jeff, THANK YOU for briefly hitting on this new trend of saying “No problem,” instead “You’re welcome.” This has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves. When someone says, “No problem,” to me, I feel like saying, “Like it could have been a problem.” Just had to get that off my chest. PS I donated today. Chris in Dallas

The answer you received regarding the Geotechnical report was correct, but not the end of the story. The Geotechnical report will give you the bearing pressures of the soil
and foundation recommendations. However, you still need someone to use this information to design the foundation. This is what a structural engineer will do.

Structural engineers typically work as subconsultants to an architect, as do the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil engineers. The architect is generally the prime consultant that coordinates all the disciplines. However, one can certainly hire a structurally engineer directly.

Does anyone remember the Chinese restaurant, China Clipper? It was owned by Joe who had been a colonel under Chaing Kai-shek…it had a large clipper airplane on top of the restaurant until it moved to Greenville Ave across from Whole Foods. Unfortunately Joe couldn’t put the clipper on top of that building. His grandaughters waited tables making origami birds for my wiggly 2 year old. I miss the family and the food.

Probably can’t find the same lovely people, but anyone know where there is similar chinese cuisine?

Question: Pt 1 – My infant’s bibs get moldy while sitting in the laundry basket after use. This happens often. We bleach them to remove the mold stains but mostly, we throw them out. Pt 2 – We recently noticed green mold on the window seals of out apt bedroom where she sleeps. It’s the green kind, not black. We had it cleaned. So are these two things related? Should we be concerned or just keep cleaning? What can we do to prevent further bibs being trashed due to the mold stains?

Does anyone know a recent story about students being steered towards vocations instead of college. The teaser had an employer being asked what an “A” in math meant to him in his place of work and the employer said it meant nothing. I’m trying to locate this story.

To the woman whose cat continues to pee on a chair and defacate on her dryer, he is trying to tell you something. Either he is sick or very unhappy. My cat peed in front of me one day and he had blood in his urine. He never did that before or since. They are pretty smart. She mentioned she locks him in the bathroom at night. That’s where he defacates on the dryer. I suggest she open the bathroom door and allow him to be his nocturnal self. He doesn’t like it.

At the end of the today’s segment there was a song, a parody of Trouble in River City. Instead Pool it was about Fishing. Does anybody know where I can get that song? I have a lot of fishermen in my life.

Since fire ants are an invasive species, there is no reason to spare them. “In fact, the much gentler native Texas ants have almost been wiped out by fire ants. If you have the huge black or red kind, you might consider sparing them and be glad you don’t have fire ants.

There is a park in the Lakewood area. It is on Lanewood, on the north side, west of Sunland. A small area, separated from a bigger park by a greenbelt, has swings, picnic tables, and a see saw.

You can also put them on Freecycle or free on Craigslist.
These days, some decorators use them, but only the ones with a certain look….those from the 70′s and later usually get recycled. Some people use them in art and craft projects where many printed pages are needed.
