Self-Reliance
He did not cast the characters.
He did not write the script.
When told he was the author,
He immediately saw the trick.

Sandwich Shop
The mother is crisp and direct when instructing the fast food worker what items to put on her sandwich.
She does not say please or thank you.
While the sandwich is being made, she leans over and kisses her young son on the forehead.
She has only so much kindness, and she hoards it all for herself and her son.

Rousseau And No Muffler
A motorcycle
Roaring loudly
Violates
The Social Contract
The rider
Does not seem
At all concerned.

Communication
1.
If I have nothing to say
I have unlimited minutes.
If I have something important to say
It seems at times that all lines are cut.
2.
People speak about themselves
To people like themselves.
3.
Satellites beam signals from high in the sky
Yet the person in front of you can't look you in the eye.
4.
There is constant background noise.
5.
If pure silence were discovered
There would be a rush like 1849.

Climate
Rain?
Rain coat.
Dark?
Turn on a light.
Snow?
Shovel.
Moral climate
Accepted,
As if
No response is possible.

Promise
Where little rainfall
Had ever been recorded
People supported
Whoever promised
The largest gardens.

Planning
The town was marketed
Before streets and homes were built.
Homes were finished
Before adequate roads and sewers were built.
People moved in with kids
Before schools were built.
And people wonder why they don't have what they want
And how it collapsed.

Consent
How dinosaurs accepted asteroids,
How Pompeii accepted Vesuvius,
How Johnstown accepted the flood,
Is how we sometimes must
Accept the judgements of the majority.

My Wife
1.
With reasonable allowance for the feelings of others
My wife is quite honest and straightforward.
2.
If not always at first,
People in time come to recognize
The quality of my wife's advice and skills.
3.
My wife reflects on her professional obligations
And tries to get them right.
My wife reflects on her personal relationships
And tries to get them right.
4.
A left-handed Jewish woman
My wife has no illusions about what people are
And what they are capable of.
