The average cost of a family of four to attend a Washington Wizards game at Verizon Center is nearly $500, well below the league average, according to personal finance website NerdWallet.

NerdWallet estimated the average cost of a family of four to attend a game for every NBA team by looking at median ticket prices on the resale market along with average prices of 16-ounce beers, 16-ounce sodas, hot dogs and parking.

Why the resale ticket market? The secondary market offers a more accurate representation of the demand for a team's tickets, according to NerdWallet.

The average cost of four tickets on the resale market, two beers, two sodas, four hotdogs and parking for a Wizards game is $497.83, below the league average of $654.09. Washington ranks as the 18th most-expensive family experience in the NBA, tied with the Phoenix Suns.

For comparison's sake, a September study utilizing a slightly different formula put the cost of a family to attend a Washington NFL team game at FedEx Field at $597.51.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, boosted by the return of LeBron James and the acquisition of Kevin Love, offer the most-expensive family experience, according to the study. With big demand for seats — a whopping $363.64 median resale price per ticket — the average cost of a family of four to attend a Cavaliers game is $1,504.89. The team had to institute an unprecedented monthly lottery system for single-game tickets this season because of demand. Oh, and the Cavaliers sold out of season tickets within eight hours of LeBron announcing his return, according to ESPN.
