One week before opening its 2013 season as the richest, most popular enterprise in American professional sports, the NFL agreed Thursday to pay $765 million to settle a lawsuit by more than 4,000 former players, including more than 250 who once wore Houston uniforms, who said the league for years withheld information about the potential life-and-death impact of repeated concussions.
