It’s Airbus A380 day at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

Updated at 1:25 p.m.: The Qantas Airbus A380 landed about 1:15 Monday. We will update with more details as they become available.

Original post: Yesterday, we had no Airbus A380s serving Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. On Monday, we’ll have one Airbus A380 flying to the airport. On Wednesday, we’ll have two A380s.

Yes, the biggest commercial passenger jet in the world is finally arriving and making regularly scheduled flights to D/FW.

The A380 era at D/FW Airport starts Monday when Qantas Airways begins operating the Airbus A380 on its Sydney-DFW route, replacing the Boeing 747-400 jet it had been using.

In addition to providing more seats, the Airbus A380 also has a longer range. Therefore, the return flight to Australia will fly nonstop to Sydney rather than making a stop in Brisbane as the 747-400 was required to do.

On Wednesday, Emirates Airline begins flying the A380 from Dubai to DFW. This involves an even bigger upgrade as Emirates replaces the Boeing 777-200 on the route.

Want to see the Qantas flight arrive? A good place to sit with your camera might be at Founder’s Plaza, the viewing area off Texan Trail at N. Airfield Drive on the airport’s northwest side.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: Looks like airplane will come in from the south, land on the airport’s west side. Founders’ Plaza isn’t so good a place. But we don’t know until it gets here.

UPDATE, 10 a.m.:We’re told those favorable tailwinds may push the Qantas arrival an hour earlier. The Qantas flight was scheduled to be at the gate at 1:45 p.m. So if you had plans to see the plane arrive, move up your plans by an hour.

On Wednesday, Emirates Flight 221 is scheduled to arrive at 9:45 a.m. Like Qantas, its landing will be some number of minutes before it gets to the gate, so plan accordingly. Here is the comparison of seating for the Qantas A380 and 747-400.
