'I Didn't Even Know What I Was Going Through'

Oct 27, 2014 | 110-part series
Chris Heller

In the latest episode of his I Am Los Angeles series, filmmaker Joris Debeij profiles Terrance, a 17-year-old student who suffers from severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. After his mother died, he was raised by his grandmother. She passed away, then he moved in with his aunt. His aunt died, and now he lives with her oldest daughter. "Terrance's life experience has led him through trauma and hardship that most adults haven't had to contend with," Debeij writes. "His story so far has been dominated with the need to cope with past and present, though he looks forward to a day when he can comprehend what he wants for his future."
