NCAA: Todd Gurley can play Nov. 15 vs. Auburn after 4-game ban
The NCAA announced Wednesday that it has suspended Georgia running back and Heisman candidate Todd Gurley for four games after determining that he accepted "more than $3,000 in cash from multiple individuals for autographed memorabilia and other items."
Georgia is appealing the suspension, the NCAA said, verifying that an oversight committee "will review the appeal this week."
Gurley has already missed two Bulldog games, wins over Missouri and Arkansas. If upheld, the suspension would force him to also miss Georgia's matchups with Florida and Kentucky before being reinstated for UGA's home date with Auburn on Nov. 15.
Per the NCAA statement, Gurley must also "repay a portion of the money received to a charity of his choice and complete 40 hours of community service as additional conditions for his reinstatement."
Gurley emerged as a Heisman front-runner after rushing for 773 yards and 8 touchdowns in Georgia's first five games, but he was suspended indefinitely on Oct. 9 over an undisclosed "memorabilia-related" violation of NCAA rules. Gurley continued to practice with the team, however, and on Oct. 22 Georgia announced it was applying to have Gurley reinstated.
The NCAA's statement indicated it asked for additional information from Georgia the following Friday, Oct. 24, which it received last weekend before informing the university of its ruling Tuesday afternoon.
"I take full responsibility for the mistakes I made, and I can't thank the University, my coaches, and teammates enough for supporting me throughout this process," Gurley said in a statement issued the day of Georgia's application for his reinstatement. "I'm looking forward to getting back on the field with my teammates.”
Georgia will play Florida in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday on CBS.
