What does embedding mean?

Embedding allows you to take your video — or someone else's video — and post it on a web page outside of Vimeo. For example, you can embed a video on your blog and then people can watch your video there without having to visit Vimeo.

How do I customize the appearance of embedded videos?

Basic accounts allow for some customization of player size, text colors, and numerous other features. To make changes, go to the video you'd like to embed and click the Share button. Then click the Show options link that appears above the embed code field. Once you've made your changes, copy the new embed code.

Vimeo Plus and Vimeo PRO members enjoy complete control over their embedded player, including options to choose what gets displayed after the video finishes playing, and even what specific sites the video can appear on! All of this can be managed on the Embed tab of each Video Settings page.

Can I make my embedded videos default to HD?

Plus and PRO members have the ability to not only embed their videos in glorious HD, but also to default those videos to be viewed in HD. This is a sweet way to make sure that your crisp, high definition videos are seen in their full glory when they're embedded around the interwebs.

If you'd like all of your videos to default to HD, just go to your Account Settings and select the Videos tab. Under "What about source files, mobile, and HD embedding?" select "Always play my videos in HD, when possible" and save. Check "Also, apply to existing videos" to do just that.

Otherwise, if you have a specific video you want to default to HD mode, head to that video page and click “Settings.” From there, select the Embed tab. Check the box next to "Default this video to HD quality when embedded" and save it like your life depends on it.

With this option turned on, the only situation in which your videos will not play in HD is when your viewer manually turns HD off.

Why isn't embedding allowed for some videos?

Vimeo Plus and PRO members have the power to disable embedding in their Privacy Settings, so occasionally you may come across a video that you’d like to share, but can’t.

I’m having trouble posting my video on Facebook. What’s the deal?

If your video isn’t embedding properly, run the video link through Facebook's link debugger, then give your post another try.

I’m having trouble posting my video on LinkedIn. What’s the deal?

LinkedIn may have cached an earlier version of your video. To resolve this, you’ll have to “trick” LinkedIn into thinking that you’re posting a new link. To do this, simply add something like this to the end of your URL: “?1”

For example, if this is your link:

Try re-posting this URL instead:
vimeo.com/12345?1

This will force LinkedIn to pull in the video details from scratch.

Can I create custom settings for all my embedded videos?

Yes, you can create embed presets to easily apply the same custom embed settings to all of your videos.

To create a custom preset, head to one of your Video Settings pages. From there, go to the Embed tab, and once you've customized the Embed Settings to your liking, click the Create new preset from these settings button. Name your new preset and save.

From now on, you can apply this preset to any video by going to that video's Settings, clicking the Embed tab, and selecting the preset from the drop-down menu under "Presets."

To apply a preset to all your videos, go to your Global Video Settings and select your preset from the drop-down menu under "Choose embed preset to apply to your videos" then click the Save as default button. Check "Also, apply to existing videos" to do just that. Easy peasy!

Do I have control over where exactly my video can be embedded?

You do if you're a Vimeo Plus or PRO member! With domain-level privacy, you can specify the websites that are permitted to embed your video. Any sites that are not on your list will receive an error message when they attempt to embed it. Take that, unauthorized sites!

To set it up domain-level privacy, head to video page and click Settings below the video player. From there, click over to the Privacy tab. In the “Where can this video be embedded?” section, select “Only on sites I choose,” then add the domain names for the sites where you'd like your video to be embedded. Don’t forget to save your changes!

Will my embedded videos play on mobile devices?

Recent mobile devices can play Vimeo’s SD and HD videos.

Plus and PRO members can create mobile versions of their videos from their Global Video Settings. These extra-small videos are compatible with lots of older mobile devices that can’t handle our SD or HD files.

If you’re having trouble with mobile playback, please contact us and we’d be happy to take a look.

Can I embed my video on an HTTPS domain?

You sure can!

Our embed code is now “protocol relative,” which means that we adhere to the protocol of your website, whether it’s HTTP or HTTPS.

If you’re using an older version of the Vimeo embed code (with a http://player.vimeo.com URL within it), you’ll simply need to change “http” to “https” and it should start working!

Why doesn't my video load when I preview it in my website editor?

Vimeo's embed code uses protocol-relative URLs, meaning that we automatically match the embedded video's protocol to your website's — either HTTP or HTTPS.

If you are previewing your website with a program like Dreamweaver, the video will not load because the program cannot determine the correct protocol to use. That said, the video should work flawlessly once you publish it.

There are two ways you can test your embed:
  1. Add http:// to the player.vimeo.com URL in your website's source code. This should allow you to see the embed in preview mode.
  2. Publish a live test page where you can see the embedded video in action.

How do I customize the embedded Plus and PRO player?

Head to your video page and click Settings below the video player. From there, select the Embed tab — this is where the magic happens!

Your fancy membership gives you complete control over every aspect of the embedded video player. When you make changes, you can save your settings as presets so you can use those settings again for other videos. Remember, the settings you choose will dictate how this video will appear, even when others embed it.

Player Preferences:
What do you want to show to your viewers before your video starts playing? You have the choice to show or hide your portrait, title, and/or byline when the embedded video first loads. It’s also very likely that other users will want to embed your video on their blog or website, and by selecting the “Let User Decide” option, you can let those members decide whether they want to show or hide these elements.

Colors and Buttons:
Want the colors of your player to match your thumbnail image? No problem-o! Itching to hide the Vimeo logo? Go for it, friend! Use the color picker and the check boxes to select exactly what you want.

Outro:
What do you want to display when your video ends? Choose to display one of these elements:
  • Videos: Showcase the latest 3 vids from your Videos, Likes, Channels, Groups, or Albums.*
  • Specific videos: Select any 3 videos.*
  • A link: Direct your viewers to another site.
  • Nothing: Show a chic black screen.
  • Beginning: Display your radical thumbnail image.
  • Text: Write a message! Basic HTML is totally allowed.
*For PRO members with Private Mode activated, these options are not available.

Any time you change the custom embed options for a particular video, that video will automatically update on sites where it has already been embedded.  Pretty cool, right?

Please note that these changes will only be reflected when your video is embedded on another web page.

Can I use my own logo in the embedded PRO player?

Yes! Give your embeds a little extra swag by uploading a custom logo. We recommend using transparent 100×100 PNG files for best results!

To upload a logo, visit My Settings and click over to the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Player Logos section and click on the box that says “Upload.”

Now that you’ve got a custom logo uploaded, it’s time to add it to your embedded video. To do this, head to video page and click Settings. In the Embed tab, check the box next to "Use a custom logo" and click on the logo you want to use. Make sure it becomes highlighted with a blue box, then click Save Changes.

What is the old embed code?

The old embed code exists because, sadly, some websites don't support our current (and vastly superior) iframe embed code.

The old embed code is there if you need it, but you should use the current version when possible and encourage the websites you use to support it, too. We can't guarantee that ye olde embed code will play back properly in all environments — it's no longer supported by our developers, and eventually, we'll decommission it.

Why is the control bar hidden on my embedded video?

If your embedded video is less than 375px wide, some of the embed elements will be hidden.

Mini Mode is activated if the player is smaller than 375px wide. In Mini Mode, the portrait, volume slider, Vimeo logo, and custom outros are hidden.

Tiny Mode is activated if the smaller than 300px wide or 170px tall. In Tiny Mode, the portrait, title, control bar, Vimeo logo, Like / Watch Later / Share buttons, and custom outros are hidden.

PRO Members: If you’re using a custom logo in the player, the criteria for Mini Mode and Tiny Mode are a bit different. Mini mode is activated when the player is smaller than 450px wide. Tiny mode is activated if the player is smaller than 338px or 190px tall.

Do custom embed settings work with third-party players?

Nope! Vimeo’s Embed Settings only apply to the embedded Vimeo player.

If you’re a PRO member using a third-party player, Vimeo’s embed customizations will not apply. However, the third-party player might support its own set of customizations — check out their support documentation for more info.
