The Mean Green soccer team won its third straight conference game Sunday, defeating Old Dominion University 2-0. The victory secured a share of the regular season Conference USA championship for the team.

The Mean Green (13-4-1) entered the day in first place holding a three point lead over Rice University in C-USA following a 5-0 victory against the University of North Carolina- Charlotte on Friday.

With Rice winning its game against Charlotte earlier Sunday, a win was key for the Mean Green in order to maintain first place of the conference heading into the final week of regular season action.

The Mean Green got off to a quick start as junior forward Karla Pineda headed in a corner kick in the 12th minute.

Pineda scored her second goal in the 38th minute off a penalty kick to extend the lead to 2-0. The goal was her fourth in the last two games and 11th on the season, which is a team high.

The early lead combined with strong defensive play provided Old Dominion with few legitimate opportunities on offense. The Mean Green came into the game having allowed 10 goals in 2014, the fewest across the conference. Junior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine had her 11th shutout of the year, which is the record for most in a season. She also is now tied for eighth in wins in a season.

The Mean Green will play its final game of the regular season on 7 p.m. on Friday at home against Western Kentucky University.
