Dallas: Workers Spray Ebola Patients’ Vomit Off of Sidewalk with Pressure Washer and No Protective Clothing (Photos and Video)

Carelessness May Lead to Spread of Disease

Ebola carrier Thomas Eric Duncan – the guy who brought Ebola to Dallas – vomited outside his apartment building.

A WFAA TV Dallas/Fort Worth Channel 8 news chopper took the following photograph showing how workers are cleaning up the vomit:

Notice that the woman on the left wearing sandals is about to step into the run-off.

And here’s another screenshot showing a guy walking through the power-wash runoff:

Couldn’t they be tracking it on the bottom of their shoes as they move around? What about the power-wash guys? Where did they go next?

Here are more screenshots from the scene:

ebola_cleanup

ebola_cleanup2

That might be a pretty good way to spread Ebola … especially if experts are right that Ebola spreads through aerosols.

Similarly, the Ebola patient’s sweat-stained sheets have been left on his bed for days without being removed, and soiled towels are still in the apartment – even though his family is still quarantined in the same apartment – because they can’t find workers willing to remove them.

As we noted yesterday, arrogance and carelessness may lead to unnecessary deaths.

Update: WFAA TV Dallas/Fort Worth Channel 8 news says that the Centers for Disease Control ordered the sidewalk to be power-washed:

Apparently, they didn’t tell anyone to use protective suits, or to keep residents or passersby away while power-washing.

And from the casualness of the guys doing the power-washing, it is unlikely that (1) they put any disinfectants in the power-washer or (2) they were even told what they were cleaning.

Heck of a job …

The attitude of government is not arrogance. It is fear and helplessness. If the authorities are wrong about the mode of transmission, then they will have to declare a national emergency. This will almost instantly destroy our economy. And what is more, if their model of Ebola transmission is wrong, no system of quarantine will save lives by preventing the spread of the disease because the barn door is open and the horse has already left. (One of the horses of the Apocalypse, by the way.) Don’t criticize government for being arrogant. I believe they know very well the consequences of their policy choices, or lack thereof.

    • kimyo

you say that as if our economy is a thriving, vibrant, shiny resource for all good things rather than a corpse that has long ago been looted, pockets emptied, gold fillings removed.

save the economy or save the citizens? if you have no citizens…..

      • jadan

If you find our economic way of life so tiresome, then you should welcome the putative pandemic because if the CDC is wrong and transmission is thru air, just say good-bye to all that. The economy & the population are joined and can’t be separated without killing both. Paper masks won’t do a thing in that case. Who’s going to deliver food & water to the quarantines if the CDC’s tune changes? Will you volunteer? If the new tune is a dire note, your nuke operators will die at the controls and maybe the plants can be shut down, maybe not. The world we know will be gone, and no matter how little warmth you feel for this life we have, I predict you’re going to miss it….

        • kimyo

perhaps you’re not acquainted with the travails of the 99%? words like ‘tiresome’ roll so easily off your tongue. can you not see that this ‘economy’ is not working for the vast majority of people on the planet?

          yet, we must save it?

i guess you belong to the dubya school of exceptionalism topped with cowboy hats, ie: we must kill capitalism in order to save it…..

i suggest we take action now. we have a much more limited ability to respond, as we didn’t do so when ebola was first detected in west africa. delaying a response further, defending the indefensible actions of the cdc while they let the country go down in flames, these are not sane options.

limit the spread, that’s what we can do. delay and defend so that we can live to fight another day. not capitulate cause it would be inconvenient to do without air travel.

          • jadan

You want a quarantine system, and you want it now! You want to restrict
travel. You want to take action, even though you’re not certain of the
nature of the threat. You’ve got faith in the government’s capability to
respond and you believe it would be effective and limit the spread.
Well, I don’t share your faith and I will be content to wait until the
nature of the threat is proved. If we’re going to wreck our economy, it
should be the last resort against a proven threat. It is the 99% that
will suffer from economic collapse, not the elite. You think people are
suffering now? Just let the state declare a national emergency to deal
with this threat and you will understand that you have voluntarily put
yourself in prison in the name of national security. For my part, I hope
the CDC is correct about the transmission of this virus and we don’t
have to go there. Do you suppose that the 100 family members voluntarily
surrendered themselves to quarantine? Or do you think they were rounded
up against their will by armed men in space suits? One thing is
certain: they had no choice, and neither will you.

          • kimyo

it’s you that said that the leadership of the cdc are making decisions based on fear.

this will never lead to good or effective public policy.

in your view, was it right for guiliani and whitman to sacrifice the health of local schoolchildren and 9/11 recovery workers in order to ‘save the economy’? please answer that, i think it will be very illuminating.

you recall of course, their assurances that ‘the air is safe to breathe’, barely 72 hours after the towers fell and while fountains of molten steel flowed lava-like at the base.

          • jadan

I speculated that CDC is fearful of uncertainty about the virus. If you
were making public policy and felt no fear in this situation, you would
not be a good person to play that role.

            The decision to resume
business-as-usual as quickly as possible after 911 was not based on any
concern for the health of the public, IMHO. It was part of the cover-up
to prevent any serious investigation. The conspiracy had just murdered
some 3000 innocent people. A few more dying of cancer down the road was
of no concern. This situation has no parallel with the potential Ebola
            pandemic.

I’m done with this conversation. You’ve got nothing constructive to say. Your ad hominem attacks are just plain silly.

          • kimyo

we wouldn’t have needed to trouble each other if the cdc was doing their job.

if the cdc had ordered face masks and suits for every hospital and emergency medical team in june, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

if the cdc had ordered 20 million sanitation kits, back in june, when the potential for the scale of this outbreak became clear, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

if, back in june, they had started to prepare guidelines for schools, and key personnel (air traffic control, say, or power transmission line workers)……..

what you’re defending is a made for tv movie. the cdc hasn’t delivered buppkiss. dallas proves this beyond any sort of doubt.

this is not an effective agency, managing a crisis. this is poorly scripted pseudo-reality tv. this is ‘heckuva job, freiden’.

  • kimyo

the cdc’s endless refrain: you can only get ebola via direct contact with bodily fluids.

so now we have 100+ people under observation. did 100+ people come into direct contact with mr duncan’s bodily fluids?

as that’s obviously not the case, one wonders when the cdc will put down their one note trumpet and provide some detail and nuance.

i’ll take the cdc seriously when they:
    1) start to protect healthcare workers with papr respirators.
    2) ensure that those in quarantine have food and supplies delivered.
    3) encourage school districts to develop and test plans to have kids work remotely from home.
    4) request that nuclear plant workers avoid contact with the public (to keep them healthy, cause there’s probably no way to disinfect the control room at indian point once an engineer starts vomiting all over the place)

It is disturbing, and life threatening to people to have science denying Republican politicians in Texas and elsewhere, who undermine science, and the real methods we need to work our way through serious problems like Climate change, Fukushima, WIPP, and Epidemics.

This is a divide among people;.

One group is unaffected by evidence, proof or the scientific method when the scientific method is the best, most reliable way to test to know the knowable. Those who try to cherry pick science, do not know how science works, says Neal DeGrasse Tyson.

The second group is moved by evidence, by proof based on the scientific method. They do not try to fool themselves nor others, because knowledge matters, truth matters in order to act and react correctly to especially any crisis situation.

Can Cosmos Get People Talking about Science Again?

We live in an age where a quarter of the American public thinks the sun orbits Earth, and only three in 10 Americans say that “dealing with global warming” should be a priority for the president and Congress. A national, or even global, conversation about science and the scientific method sounds like just what the doctor ordered. As Dennis Overybye wrote in the New York Times, “we all need a unifying dose of curiosity and wonder.” Ad astra (to the stars), Mr. Tyson, and take the rest of us with you.

          • mikekelley10

I can only guess that it is political correctness since the countries affected are in Africa. President Ebola had no problem shutting down travel to Israel last summer over a pretext:

            July 23, 2014
–The FAA announced today that they have not lifted their ban against travel to or from Tel Aviv’s airport and will prohibit travel to the country for an additional 24 hours.

“The agency is working closely with the Government of Israel to review the significant new information they have provided and determine whether potential risks to U.S. civil aviation are mitigated so the agency can resolve concerns as quickly as possible,” the FAA said in a statement.

This comes a day after they barred all American air carriers from flying to or from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv following a rocket attack within a mile of the airport.–

I guess one rocket attack scares Obama a lot more than an Ebola outbreak does.

Yes. Remember when Republicans were so good that they had Lincoln as the head of their party? And, Democrats were so good that they had Kennedy. And, look what happened to our best Presidents. Yet Obama is still not
abiding by Congressional law to release all the documents on Kennedy’s
            assassination. You can guess why.

When Democrats collude with avowed Fascists in Kiev and act the part of Fascists here in the U.S. to entrench a Surveillance State, a Police State and a War State, they are not different from the extreme Right Wing Fascists making up the GOP who initiated, installed and promote a Surveillance State, a Police State, and a War State.

So yes, you do have a point. Fascists do not use science nor policy nor law to help people, but rather to control and harm people. See:

Making matters worse, our public voting system has been privatized and
outsourced to a handful of domestic, foreign, and multi-national corporations, most of whom have close ties to the right wing of the Republican Party. Just two companies, ES&S and Diebold, started by two brothers, Bob and Todd Urosevich, electronically process (using touchscreen machines or optical scanners), 80% of all votes. Their employees are in a perfect position to rig elections nation-wide. And evidence is mounting that elections in America have been computer programmed to prefer conservative candidates of both political parties.
            ……………………

So, I would think that all parties could back the following in their Primaries and in General Elections to have their vote finally count and return to a society that helps all people not fascists.

I offer the following simple “demand” for consideration by OWS, as this one likely underscores almost every other. Or, at least, without it, all other demands may ultimately be rendered moot. Every U.S. citizen 18 years of age or older who wishes to vote, gets to vote. Period. Those votes, on hand-marked paper ballots, will be counted publicly, by hand, on Election Night, at the precinct, in front of all observers and video cameras.

Well, which is it? Global warming or climate change? Global warming used to be all the rage until it seemed to be getting colder. Then you guys started yapping about “climate change”, and now the media hypes every piddly storm that comes by as “unprecedented”. I’ll show you a real storm, and it happened early in the industrial revolution. It was the horrific 1931 floods in China. If anything comparable happened today, you know that the media dopes would be telling us how it was all due to man-made climate change:

–To this day, the China flood of 1931 is regarded as the most devastating water-related disaster anywhere in the 20th century, perhaps ever. During the flood, over 140,000 Chinese drowned, 3.7 million were killed in the 9 months that followed and not less than 70,000 square miles flooded, often over 10-15 feet deep for periods of 3 -6 months.

The flood had begun with record summer rainstorms all across China. By August, all hell broke loose as China’s 3 primary rivers, the Yangtze, the Hwang and the Hwai, each massively overflowed their banks, surpassing all previous flood levels. The Yangtze alone would flood to record levels for over a month and a half, starting from Chongqing Aug. 6th, to Hankou Aug. 19th, down to Nanjing on Sept. 16th, covering over 900 miles long averaging 40 miles wide.–

          http://www.aboutgaoyou.com/history/floods/the_floods.aspx

          • Bev

It is both Global Warming and Climate Change. Because the earth’s weather is destabilizing, weather events can swing wildly in the extreme in both hot and cold, drought and flood directions, and all the while overall warming occurs which creates feedback loops that warm and destabilize more and more, faster and faster.

The earth has only had a small window of stable weather which occurred during the last 8,000 years making agriculture possible. We need a stable weather system. We need to address Global Warming which causes Climate Change fluctuations.

          • mikekelley10

So you are saying that the same government that can’t keep carriers of Ebola and God knows what else out of our country or even build a functioning web site can somehow “fix” our climate if we just give them enough money and power? Only the left buys the scam anymore. I am 60 years old, and the weather now is not any more extreme than it was when I was born. For the US, the “dirty ’30′s” as my Dad called the 1930′s were much more extreme than now. Just look at the extreme weather back then:

            http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/07/14/newly-found-weather-records-show-1930s-as-being-far-worse-than-the-present-for-extreme-weather/

Keep in mind that the extreme temperatures measured in the 1930′s were more “real” than more modern measurements that have been greatly affected by 70 years worth of new concrete and asphalt, some of which is right under temperature sensors. Anthony Watts and his team documented the fiasco that is US ground temperature measurement here:

Thank you Big Dan for being awake enough to question everything! American News is ALL owned and controlled by 3 huge war profiteering giants, keeping the American people in the dark with what is TRULY happening in the world. Twisted angles by talking heads all paid off by special interest groups. Our reporters are mere actresses and actors, with even Hollywood contracted out with big media. Why do we think USA is in perpetual war mode, self destructing itself like all empires before it did? Ebola is yet another fear tactic…look at the “solution” our terrorist leaders suggests “military intervention”!!! Surprise!!!!! Not saying there has not been some horrific virus spread, that nurse did not die of the flu. Yet, WHERE it came from and WHY are things people should realize they are in deep denial if they think it definitely originated in West Africa. USA supplies the world with weapons, including chemical weapons. We are a war economy rather than peace economy. Watch the youtube video “Military ‘Cancer”. When I hear the insular and lacking in humility types call our soldiers “brave heroes”, we know the cancer has spread to the brain. AMERICA- This was all along the plan of the DemocRATS, and the O Bummer, this as I had earlier called the “Scorched Earth Policy” in military, when a retreating loosing enemy start creating more “Chaos” and cause “Fear” in the minds of the people, O bungler all along has said, I have a “Pen & Phone” and I will change how this country will be governed…well he has started the final stages of his exit strategic plan, and his minions in CDC and NIH, CMS are going along with it, this is a classical case of “Socialism” taking lasting roots in AMERICA, as we see unfold.

What the CDC is saying and the “Health Officials” are saying are imo abosulutely false, and misleading the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

You read it and makeup you mind, if CDC and the O Bungler Administration are telling the truth to the AMERICAN PEOPLE of the seriousness of the situation.

I can see as the fall and winter season approaches and the Thanks Giving/Holiday Seasons come along, we will see more people effected as there will be more “Air” Travel and infections spreading.

ava’s credentials don’t enter in to it. your credentials as well as mine are meaningless, we are anonymous posters on the internet. my dog (with auto-correct on) is as reliable a source as you are.

cidrap, however, is qualified, yes? here’s their take:

We believe there is scientific and epidemiologic evidence that Ebola virus has the potential to be transmitted via infectious aerosol particles both near and at a distance from infected patients, which means that healthcare workers should be wearing respirators, not facemasks.

The minimum level of protection in high-risk settings should be a respirator with an assigned protection factor greater than 10. A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with a hood or helmet offers many advantages over an N95 filtering facepiece or similar respirator, being more protective, comfortable, and cost-effective in the long run.

We strongly urge the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to seek funds for the purchase and transport of PAPRs to all healthcare workers currently fighting the battle against Ebola throughout Africa—and beyond.

Then Ava should cite his sources instead of making claims he pulls out of his ass as evidenced by “I believe” in his comment. It’s called using your brain and not being a moron.

    Barf Aerosol should work well

From what I see in the above photos, allowing the workers to clean-up vomit from an Ebola infected patient without being trained and supplied with the requisite Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and decontamination facilities is criminal. And I mean it in the sense that the CDC apparently is all mouth and no action. Air Purifying Respirators with P-100 Filters would stop the virus, but with Air Purifying Respirators a certain amount of leakage of the facepiece occurs, so that, for Chemical Exposures, you’re not permitted to use Air Purifying Respirators if the concentration is Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health. In instances where any inhalation of the chemical must be avoided, Supplied Air Respirators are required. As an added concern, the tear from the eyes drains into the sinuses, so any virus entering the eye but being blocked from the lungs by a respirator can still infect the body, full face respirators would seem to be a must.

Is no one in control in this country? There should have been taping-off and protection of the affected area until a HAZMAT team could decontaminated using appropriate agents. In addition, the HAZMAT team should have removed the contaminated items from the house. We’re becoming a Third World Nation if we’d let these men and the public be exposed after knowing what was there.

OMG this is unbelievable, how could these cleaning people be so completely oblivious to what is going on around them

  • jane nower

Hmm makes you wonder where they have better procedures to handle Ebola infection here or in Africa, I would guess Africa judging from the way this was handled.. DUH!

  • Kristine Withers

I am starting to think this is being done on purpose. If you put this with the “Honduran Flu” due to open borders (that has affected 500 American kids, Killing 4 kids and 2 adults, and paralyzing alot of Victims), there seems to be a plan, Either that, or sheer stupidity on the part of our govt. (Which is controlled by minority and foreign interest now anyway).

  • Jeannee

The Ebola victim Ashoka Mukpo suspects he contracted Ebola from pressure washing a car WITHOUT PROTECTION that was driven by an Ebola patient. The guy pressure washing the vomit in Dallas best be in quarantine now..poor thing..who allowed him to do that?

  • Raplh Murphy

Ebola in a bucket of vomit can last for days. Ebola washed into a storm drain won’t last long.

    • Soflodoug

Why dont you go to this scene and prove it asshole

  • SICKOFTHELAPDOGMEDIA

Think maybe we need to monitor the workers?

  • benbernecky

The cleanup crew is an example of what happens to a business that hire ignorant illegals with the science education and haz-mat training of a rock. Personally the whole news reel is a politically driven distraction from the surge across our southern borders of a potpourri of diseases and terrorist threats incarnate. The film footage of air attacks seem to be on empty building, I never see people in the videos except in what looks like old footage from the old Iraq war. You never see ISIS vehicles, ammo dumps, other assets being targeted. It’s not like the media would ever LIE to US. Why would any sane administration not protect its people, unless its leader – Obama – hated its people. He always seems PRO Islamic. I have never seen so many “readjustments” to our language and freedom of speech since Obama took office..

Looks like our third world ebola carrier brough his third world medical care and sanitation with him.

  • Abe

    .wonder if they’re undocumented workers??

  • TRUTH

“Ebolavirus is classified as a biosafety level 4 agent, as well as a Category A bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It has the potential to be weaponized for use in biological warfare,[132][133] and was investigated by the Biopreparat for such use, but might be difficult to prepare as a weapon of mass destruction because the virus becomes ineffective quickly in open air.[134]”

If it becomes inefective in open air then there should not be a problem. Is there actual proof this virus exists? Possibly another ploy of BIG PHARMA to keep the cash cow coming. Why isn’t travel to and from that region suspended? Could the answer be ‘diamonds?”

  • Soflodoug

Well it looks like idiot liberals are doing their jobs status quo.
All of these people especially in these pictures are comtacting ebola.
How frickin stupid can somebody be? Power washing ebola lile its sand from the beach.
And the unknowing lady walks through it in flip flops!
My god, I hope my assumptions are wrong.
All of these people need to be in quarantine including the flipflop lady.
Cdc you are nothing more than a liberal bureaucratic ass house.

“Heck of a job Brownie! Mission Accomplished”
    But who’s saying it?

  • openeyedamerican

Did it ever occur to people that this is mostly hype, more sensationalized fear tactics to fuel what is actually USA’s biggest threat of “disease”…..which is our Military Cancer? We’ve merely enabled our media, all owned and controlled by 3 huge war profiteers, control our minds into “action”. The US Military in social/political terms is just like cancer, it is a ferocious rogue cell mass that feeds on its hosts, destroying our nations tissues and killing our nation EXACTLY like any cancer. It has spread to people’s brains, eating away at our ability to think critically or rationally about the fact “military intervention” has only ever been about money and a sick “power”. Hitler had the same hold on his followers, they too were unaware of their reality, lacked social and moral compass, thought they were “free” from the terror of the jews. Just look at the “solution” our leaders suggest, more military intervention! “Terrorism” and Ebola are not our threats….never were, and both manufactured within our very own rogue cell and lab. The “conspiracy theory” lies within our history books, including the false claim Nazi’s would have “taken over the world” had USA not been involved in WWII. We have “justified” our involvement in that war, just as we “justify” it now. Meanwhile, Germany is 15th most peaceful nation today vs USA at #88. Awake yet? No? then google youtube video titled “Military Cancer”. then think critically and starting fighting for clean air, clean water, free college education like the truly free nations, and a clean soul.

  • Joy Leftow

Totally crazy. I think they do want to spread it as to cull the population.

  • Mckee

I was wondering about washing ebola patient or quarantined linen, clothes or showers. All this goes into our water system. I asked the question on another site that brought me here. So I am not the only one worried about the clean up dirty water . How should it be sanitized?
