Has the honeymoon in Lubbock ended for Kingsbury?

Texas and Texas Tech fans have one thing in common, and it’s not something you can say every year.

Bad football.

The kind of football that causes fan bases to start talking about hoops in late October. The kind that has two splashily hired head coaches searching for the right answers with the effectiveness of a mannequin in a wind tunnel machine filled with cash.

And in the case of Charlie Strong and Kliff Kingsbury, it’s guaranteed cash.

Saturday night will mark the first time in 21 meetings that each team will enter this annual matchup with losing records.

For Tech, it’s safe to say the honeymoon with former quarterbacking great Kliff Kingsbury officially ended last week when the Red Raiders gave up 82 points in one game to TCU.

When it comes to finding Horns’ leaders, it’s a numbers game

Each week of the season, Texas football coach Charlie Strong picks team captains, tasking two seniors with handling the coin toss for that game.

The first-year coach opted for that approach over naming permanent captains, fearful he might misjudge someone’s character and be stuck with him all season long.

After eight games, Strong says he has identified his leaders, but “there’s just not enough.”

Bumgarner, Giants beat KC 3-2 in Series Game 7

A giant, indeed.

Madison Bumgarner punctuated his World Series performance for the ages by pitching the San Francisco Giants to their third championship in five years with a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

The big left-hander came out of the bullpen to throw five scoreless innings on two days' rest, saving a Series pushed to the limit.

Qualifying change to hike number of runners at UIL cross country meet

The UIL cross country championships will have a different look this fall, thanks to possibly upward of 400 more runners winding through Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

As a result of rule changes enacted by the University Interscholastic League, the top four teams will advance from regional competition this weekend to the state meet on Nov. 8.

Vettel speeds through downtown, revving crowd for F1 race

Sebastian Vettel, Formula One’s four-time world champion, wanted to play Wednesday afternoon and show off a prototype car that he helped design.

It didn’t matter that he was in the middle of crowded, downtown Austin.

Or that there were street lights or speed limits.

Or that his idea of fun was spinning a racecar into a doughnut or fishtailing in front of the Capitol.

Stars beat Barons in overtime

Texas Stars coach Derek Laxdal was already familiar with the prospects in the Edmonton Oilers system.

As the coach of the Edmonton Oil Kings from 2010 to 2014, Laxdal’s team played at the same arena, Rexall Place, as the NHL team and he coached five Oilers draft picks in the Western Hockey League.

A month into the season, he’s already shored up any gap in his knowledge base after playing the Oklahoma City Barons, Edmonton’s AHL affiliate, four times in the first six games.

Swimming gears up for ‘Slowvember’

With five weeks before their next meet, Texas’ men’s swimming team is cranking up its workload.

Coach Eddie Reese refers to this time as “Slowvember.” He’ll break down his athletes through intense training, trusting it will reap benefits at the back end of the season.

In 37 years at Texas, Reese says he’s learned “easier doesn’t work.”
