Questions about issues in the news for students 13 and older.

Last week, after a “radically different looking” Renée Zellweger attended an awards ceremony, many speculated that she had had plastic surgery, though Ms. Zellweger denied it.

What are your thoughts about cosmetic surgery in general and about the flood of news stories and reactions to Ms. Zellweger? Why do you think people seemed to care so much about how her face looks?

In the Room for Debate forum, several writers take on “Renée Zellweger and the Question of Aging .”

Troy Alexander writes:

Appearance is the gateway to one’s personal brand — it is the first thing someone sees, and right or wrong, one of the first things we judge (and are judged on). Just as we grow and change in our romantic partnerships, our family and our career, so too should we evolve within that personal style as we age. Whether Renée Zellweger has had plastic surgery is none of our business; it’s her brand and she can do with it what she wants.

But there is a bigger issue here. As a society we need to value women as they age, and not push them to feel that they have to go under the knife to look younger. And at the same time, we have to stop criticizing those same women for doing just what we have pressured them to do. It is up to each of us to embrace the changes that come with time or do something about them. That is where the magic lies — in being O.K. with who we choose to be.

Cindy Joseph writes:

Plastic surgery is simply a symptom. Ageism in our country, specifically against women, has gone too far.

…Women are judged on their looks and then told their “looks” fade over time, which leads them to believe they will be less valued as they age. No wonder women spend billions of dollars every year on Botox, wrinkle creams and cosmetic surgery to stave off the signs of life as time moves on.

Everyone is free to do with their bodies whatever they want. If the cosmetic surgery may help some people to have more esteem I do not going to judge them. The only concern about that is when people had the cosmetic surgery thinking about pleasing others likes husbands or wives. Remember that the cosmetic surgery does not change the person you are inside and we never will win the race against the time. So try to fall in love with someone who loves you for your feelings and not for your physical appearance.

I saw the news about Renee, and his change is drastic, of course she has some surgeries in his face. I think that before of surgery she looked better and more natural. She made a removal Bichat ball in her cheeks and removed excess eyelid skin also she lost weigh however for me now she looks a plastic girl instead of the image that had in the film Bridge Jones’s Diary. In general Cosmetic Surgery is the best options when you don’t feel well with any parts of your body. If the cosmetic surgery serve to win confidence and to become in a safe person is a good option, but if the cosmetic surgery becomes in obsession is a trouble because people can lose their facial features and to become in a person totally different also the risk that each surgery implies. In the worst cases a bad practice medical may lead to death

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I think Renée Zellweger did get plastic surgery. She looks completely different then when she did just a few weeks ago and without plastic surgery I don’t think that is possible. New technology is increasing constantly. Many women get plastic surgery done because they are not happy with what they look like. Society today is based off how pretty or skinny a person is. Society shouldn’t be like that, I believe in natural beauty; makeup is one thing but plastic surgery is taking it a little too far. I think plastic surgery is acceptable when a person has been in a severe accident and desperately needs it but if someone isn’t happy with themselves then they should do what makes them happy. I agree with Troy Alexander that it’s your own face you are free to do whatever you like to it but I also agree with Cindy Joseph that women are judged too much on their looks. Women who get plastic surgery aren’t always satisfied and sometimes want to come back for more and I think it has to do with being self conscious. Women today try and compete with all the models that are considered “beautiful.” I don’t believe in plastic surgery, I believe that everyone is beautiful in their own way and should not have to change their looks to prove that to themselves. I would never get plastic surgery because it shows you want to fit in with society and I like the fact of being different and being my own person. I would never change my looks just to look the way other people want me to. Society should not be based off of anorexic models that use photo shop and get plastic surgery done. Women want to change what they look like because of the “image” society has.

I think that cosmetic or face surgery is really bad for everybody living in this world. Replacing a body with plastic is very dangerous and it can have a negative impact on individuals. If the surgery allows a person to feel very well and happy, then anyone who thinks that having a surgery is good should do it because no one will stop anybody from feeling well or better. Cosmetic surgery can kill a person as the person grows older and still does face surgery. The worst case that can happen to someone’s face is if the surgery is not done properly, the person that is taking the surgery can have a scare face and you will end up be creating problems. Having a cosmetic surgery can sometimes decrease your age for living in this world and this can happen because people who have surgeries on their body usually repeat doing surgeries after surgeries which can decrease the life of a person. I might have cosmetic surgery because i just do not think that i will have it. Why should i replace my body with plastic, it makes no sense. I personally think that anybody that does cosmetic surgery lacks common sense and replacing your face with plastic is dangerous.
