Winning spirit fills Denton High

Denton High School is on a winning track, and we congratulate everyone involved for helping to make this a year to remember.

Much of the credit goes to the Broncos football squad, which has started the season 5-0 for the first time in 21 years, but the wins we’re talking about aren’t confined to the gridiron.

We have no doubt that the football team’s success has served as a catalyst for a rebirth of school spirit, but it suddenly seems that all students, parents, family members, staff and teachers, administrators, alumni, friends — anyone with ties to Denton High — is excited about what’s going on at the campus.

That’s the way it should be — high school is supposed to be a highlight of young lives and a center for community and family activities.

But it doesn’t stop there. High schools also deserve the support of their communities, from churches and businesses to service groups and clubs and organizations.

It should be clear to all on game day or night — no matter what the sport or activity may be — that the community is standing solidly behind its schools and its young people.

Like we said, the resurging spirit at Denton High may have started with the football team’s success, but it’s already moved far past that point and there’s no reason it has to end once football season is over.

Denton High Principal Dan Ford told us there’s a feeling of team throughout the whole school.

“The culture of winning is really everywhere in our school,” Ford said. “It’s in our athletics, academics, our fine arts. Everybody feels that this is the year of the Bronco.”

Alejandro Ruiz, a 17-year-old senior, told us that he’s noticed a significant increase in school spirit that has galvanized students into a family and restored a lost sense of pride.

With a homecoming showdown against Fort Worth Brewer tonight, the Broncos football team has a chance to move to 6-0, which they haven’t done since 1987, according to Denton school district spokesman Mario Zavala Jr.

We wish them luck, but win or lose we know they’ll do their best, so let’s make sure that we give them our full support.

It’s easy to discount the importance of such things, but if we call a community home, we should be willing to wear a school’s colors and cheer on every student involved in every activity.

The young men and women who march in the band, play sports, participate in drill team, cheer or take part in other extracurricular activities are the cream of the crop and they need to know how proud we are of them.

School spirit and community pride should go hand in hand.
