Daemen College will be the first private college in the region to offer a master's degree in social work.

The program was approved recently by the state Department of Education and will be offered starting in the spring. The University at Buffalo is the only local public college offering an MSW.

College leaders said they sought to connect the program to an already-strong bachelor's track in social work. They also said it will prepare individuals for in-demand specialties.

Social work is one of the fastest-growing careers in the U.S., and projected by the U.S. Department of Labor to grow by 25 percent between 2010 and 2020. More than 650,000 people currently hold social work degrees.
