Churchill Downs Inc. has announced a $4.2 million capital construction project at its Louisville racetrack to improve the Winner's Circle area for owners of horses in the Kentucky Derby.

The racetrack plans to build 20 private, open-air suites next to Churchill's trackside Winner's Circle that will be all-inclusive, located between the sixteenth pole and the finish line, according to a news release.

In addition, the racetrack plans to revamp the trackside Winner's Circle and develop a new courtyard area that will provide premium seating during Derby week and a relaxing atmosphere for racing fans, according to the release.

The suites will reduce congestion and provide better access to the racetrack and paddock runway area.

"The Winner's Circle Suites will feature comfortable undercover seating with in-venue wagering options and full-service hospitality, including a premium open bar and gourmet food," the news release stated. "Also, guests will have access to an indoor, semi-private hospitality area and restrooms exclusive to the venue. All areas of the project will be accessible for persons with mobility disabilities."

Churchill Downs also plans to triple the number of complimentary tickets for Derby horse owners from six to 18 as part of the enhancement, according to the news release.

In the past, owners had access to food and drinks in an area near the paddock and could acquire two additional boxes in Section 318 if needed. Under the new design, owners can purchase an additional box if the 18 seats provided are not sufficient, according to the news release.

"There are many wonderful seating options at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, but these new Winner's Circle Suites are where anyone who has ever owned or dreamed of owning a racehorse wants to be," Kevin Flanery, president of Churchill Downs racetrack, said in the release.
