Bennett College's board has signed off on a plan to develop its honors program into an honors college, which school leaders hope will attract high-caliber students.

"Through this college, we are committed to providing our scholars with challenging academic experiences," said Bennett President Rosalind Fuse-Hall in a statement. "We also believe this will be a prime source for the development of a pool of students that will enter graduate and professional schools."

The plan was announced during the college's recent Honors Convocation. It calls for a transition that includes strengthening the curriculum and following guidelines from the National Collegiate Honors Council.

The college, one of only two all-female historically black colleges in the country, has developed 20 core courses and 25 honors leadership courses for the new college. The program will enhance undergraduate research and serve as a clearinghouse for fellowships and scholarships.
