Surry County is competing against locations in Virginia and Arkansas for the expansion of a manufacturing company that plans to add 75 jobs.

The firm wants to make a decision on the expansion by early November so it can hire before the holidays, said Todd Tucker, president of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership. He declined to name the manufacturer but said it has operated in the county for many years.

The location being considered is in the Mount Airy area. Tucker said that he didn't know what the other states were potentially offering the company, but that he feels confident that Surry County has a good chance in landing the expansion.

Tucker said Mount Airy officials approved up to $67,500 worth of incentives for the project this week. The county is also considering incentives of $67,500, and the company is vying for a One North Carlina Fund grant, he said.

"We're excited about the opportunity to help one of our existing industries add employment," Tucker said.

Another company, Prism Medical Products LLC, is expanding in Surry County with 30 jobs, with help from a $300,000 building reuse grant to support the reuse of a 9,000-square-foot building located at 119 West Main St.
