Fred Moore Day Nursery School is holding its fifth annual gospel brunch this month, with funds raised going toward a planned school expanions and upgrades that will allow 25 additional children up to age 2 to be served.
The event, which had been scheduled for today, has been reset for 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 21 at the Center for Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. in Denton.
Wendy McGee, executive director for the school, said the brunch will be “a wonderful morning of fantastic music” benefiting the capital project under way at the school.
“It’s a very uplifting event because we have local choirs performing,” she said. “We want it to be an event the whole family can come out and enjoy. It’s just a nice event to come out and hear some good music and support a worthy cause.”
In addition to entertainment by local choirs, food and refreshments, there will be a silent auction of holiday wreaths decorated by local businesses. Holiday crafts created by the children will also be for sale. The school will honor Gene Gumfory and Teri and Andre “Frenchy” Rheault for their service to the facility.
The nonprofit child care center, which was founded in the early 1950s, provides care for low-income families with children from six weeks to 5 years of age. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in October for a 4,322-square-foot handicapped-accessible expansion, which school officials say they’re hopeful will be completed in the spring.
The expansion will add two classrooms for infants and toddlers, a parking lot, a retaining wall, an activity room, storage spaces and two offices. More than 70 children are enrolled at the facility and many others under 2 years of age are on a waiting list.
The money raised at the brunch will go toward the school expansion and upgrades, McGee said. In previous years, money collected from the brunch supported staff salaries, programming, operation costs and curriculum.
The school is funded with tuition fees that are charged on a sliding scale based on a family’s income and the number of people in the household, and from donations, fundraisers and grants.
About 250 people can be seated at the brunch, McGee said. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and can be purchased at the Fred Moore Day Nursery School, 821 Cross Timber St., or at the door. For more information, contact the school at 940-387-8214.
