Dalton Gregory is a Denton native. His parents, Birge and Juanita Gregory moved to Denton around 1947, to buy and operate Denton Flower Shop located on N. Elm St. During the next 10 years his mom received a Masters degree from Texas Woman's University and his dad earned a Masters degree from what is now the University of North Texas. They closed the flower shop in 1958 and both taught in the Denton Public Schools until they retired.

He taught in the Austin Independent School District for three years and then worked for five years for the Houston ISD as the site coordinator for an environmental education camp. He earned a Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 1981 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

In 1982, Dalton and his wife, Donna Steward Gregory, returned to Denton because they felt like it would be a great place to raise their family. They have three adult daughters who are all graduates of Ryan High School and the University of Texas at Austin.
