Actors from the London Stage, an educational and theatrical program of classically trained actors from major English theaters, will be at the University of North Texas next week. During their residency, they’ll present minimalist performances of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” next week.

London Stage actors visit for residency

Actor Patrick Stewart never hid his affinity for the Bard.

Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Men) co-founded an English company, London Stage, that uses major British theater companies as feeders to tour as an educational outreach. The company, which focuses exclusively on Shakespeare, will visit Denton next week for two minimalist performances of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

Presented locally by the University of North Texas Fine Arts Series, the company will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Nov. 1 at the UNT Main Auditorium, 1401 W. Hickory St.

A small ensemble of actors will play up to three roles each to deliver the stinging comedy about marriage and the frailty of the ego. The visiting group includes actors who hail from the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

During the troupe’s visit, the actors will work with UNT students from the English department during a residency, guiding them through analysis and proper readings of the playwright’s verse.

Tickets to Much Ado About Nothing are $10 for the general public, $5 for UNT faculty, staff and Alumni Association members, free for UNT students. Students can print their free ticket, while others may purchase tickets at http://untuniontickets.com.
