New sports store to open in Rayzor Ranch

The new Academy Sports and Outdoors store at Razyor Ranch will open Friday, Oct. 24 after a ribbon cutting ceremony and private shopping sprees on Thursday, Oct. 23.

The day before the grand opening, 30 young Denton residents will be able to use $100 gift cards from Academy, that were distributed by Big Brothers Big Sisters Denton County.

With the help of new store employees, the kids will be able to spend their gift cards at 5 p.m., after the ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:45 p.m.

On Friday, the store opens to the public at 8 a.m. and the first 150 customers who like or follow an Academy social media page will win a gift card.

The cards vary in value from $20 to $500.

The 72,000-square-foot store is at 2600 W. University Drive in the Rayzor Ranch Marketplace.

 

Denton Best Western earns top awards

The Denton Best Western Premier Crown Chase Inn & Suites won two awards from the brand this year, one of 44 hotels in North American to earn both honors.

For the fourth year in a row, the Denton hotel won the M.K. Guertin Award, for properties that best represent the brand and vision for the hotels.

Additionally, they earned the Champion Customer Care Award for “exceptional levels of service and care to guests,” according a press release.

The awards were presented at the Best Western International 2014 Convention in Toronto for more than 2,100 properties in North America and their proprietors.

 

Armadillo Ale Works earns recognition

Quakertown Stout, a beer by Armadillo Ale Works, was named the best Imperial Stout beer in 2014 at the Great American Beer Festival, a national convention for the Brewers Association.

The brewery was one of 234 that won medals at the event, which is the largest commercial beer competition in the world, according to the Brewers Association.

Armadillo Ale Works has offices based in Denton, and currently brews its beers at Deep Ellum Brewing Company in Dallas while they work to build a facility in Denton.

 

Living communities renamed

The Sterling House senior living communities in Denton have been renamed, as have the other 31 communities owned by the same company in DFW.

Sterling House of Denton is now Brookdale Denton North and Sterling House on Parkway is now Brookdale Denton South.

Brookdale Communities own 33 retirement facilities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and have changed all of the names to incorporate “Brookdale” for continuity in the brand, a press release said.

 

Local graduate from Texas Auction Academy

William Quinn, of Denton, recently graduated from the Texas Auction Academy, a Texas Workforce Commission approved program for future auctioneers.

At the school, Quinn completed 83 hours of auctioneer training in nine days, including the rapid auctioneer speech, book keeping and state and federal laws about auctioning.
