DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Monday will mark the first day of practice for high school football teams across north Texas. They are welcoming the return of a Texas tradition, but they’re stuck with the heat.

The UIL has established strict rules to protect student athletes working out in the summer heat. Coaches are also expected to know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

With temperatures expected to approach 100 degrees, unlimited water will be available to athletes on the practice field. Once temperatures reach 82 degrees, athletes can be at a very high risk.

Players will be weighed before and after practice each day to monitor heat-related weight loss. A loss of three pounds from a single day of practice is normal. Anything more can be concerning and may require additional attention.

Coaches are also expected to know the physical conditions of their student-athletes and adjust practices accordingly.

Athletes showing symptoms of heat exhaustion must be provided medical care at once.
