The death of Margaret Thatcher has inspired an amazing number of reflections from people who watched her from afar and appreciated her impact on history. And then there the reflections from those who had a closer, personal appreciation.
One such memory comes from Richard Fisher, who heads the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. He’s written his reflections in this piece for this newspaper. It’s long, but it contains some really interesting observations, such as Fisher with Thatcher during the beginning of the stock market crash in 1987 and a teasing exchange between Nancy Fisher and Thatcher, excerpted below.
Nancy asked if she might visit the powder room before we sat down for lunch. A very girlish Thatcher personally escorted her to one and left her to freshen up, encouraging her to make herself comfortable after pointing out the room’s newly installed curtains and pretty hand towels. Just as Nancy was settled, the door flew open and the Iron Lady bellowed: “But don’t dawdle! We have much to discuss.”
