Weekend Challenge: Memories Revisited II

Hi friends!

I'm taking the reins from Cameron this weekend to revive a challenge I first presented to y'all about two years ago. It was called "Memories Revisited" and it yielded some of my favorite weekend challenge entries ever, including this gem by Chris Zabriskie, which won the challenge and was subsequently selected as a Staff Pick:

So, ya know. NO PRESSURE or anything. But I do expect greatness.

Your challenge is to make a video about a family story, memory, or moment in time — and we'd like to you use archival media to tell this story. We want to see your creative treatment of a moment from the past!

Here's the basic premise:
1. You must tell a story about a family. You can tell a story about your own family, or help a friend or complete stranger off the street tell a story about their families. As long as there is at least one familial relation mentioned, you're good!

2. You must use archival media of some kind. This could mean very old 8 or 16mm films, home videos, photographs, or sound recordings.

Some of my favorite videos on the site are made in this way. Take this new piece by Ivan Cash, in which he mixes old and new footage of his neighbor Howard's farm in upstate New York to paint a picture of a special person and place from his childhood:

For a few more very excellent examples, see the original challenge post and also the album of entries from the original challenge back in 2011.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

+ We're using "family" as a loose term, as we realize families come in all shapes and sizes. If the people you consider "family" and want to share a story about aren't blood related, that's fine. DNA testing will not be part of the judging process!

+ It's always fun to dust off those old family photo albums, or watch old film reels and VHS tapes, but if you don't have time to take a jaunt down memory lane, don't sweat it! Even just one photograph will do!

+ If you don't have much documentation of the moment you want to tell a story about, try filming some reenactments!

+ Feel free to use any medium you'd like to tell the story. If animation is your thing, try animating to an old audio recording, or to the audio from a home movie. Or use a photo in your animation! In "The Sandwich Movie," Sean David Christensen mixes old photos and documents into his animation of a funny family story:

The Rules:

+ Use archival material to tell a story about a family story, memory, or moment in time. Remember that only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ Keep your film under 3 minutes.

+ If you add music, make sure you use a song you or a buddy created, or something from the Vimeo Music Store! If you do choose to use a Music Store song, please throw a link in the description.

+ Anything goes for your title, but add this at the end of your video's description: "Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge"

+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by ***Tuesday, October 7th, 2014*** at 11:59 PM (EST). Just follow the screenshots below:

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video doesn't show up at first; we'll get to it!

The Prizes:

+ The winner will receive a Challenge badge on their video, and free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you're already a Plus member, you'll get another year tacked on to the end of your current subscription.

+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space in their weekly quota!

looks like we skipped an additional week. That's OK, was tied up with birthdays, weddings anyway. Maybe there will be time this weekend if one is announced.
