Boys golf: Argyle again finishes second

For the second straight year, Argyle and Andrews finished as the top two teams at the Class 3A boys state tournament.

And like last year, Andrews was slightly better than Argyle on the final day of the tournament. Andrews finished with a two-day score of 638 — six strokes ahead of Argyle’s 644 on Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort near Bastrop.

On the final day of the tournament, Argyle coach Brady Bell said the wind made an already tough golf course more difficult.

“Conditions were harder,” Bell said. “They [Andrews] had three kids that played really solid today, and we didn’t play good enough.”

Sophomore Alex Isakson led the Eagles with a score of 78 on Tuesday. Junior Lance Roden shot 79 and paced Argyle with a seventh-place finish. Seniors Nick Louy and Colton Katzen shot 83 and 86, respectively. Sophomore Tommy Parker shot 93.

Only the four lowest scores go toward the team total.

Argyle picked up its second consecutive second-place finish in its third state tournament appearance. Texarkana Pleasant Grove finished in third with a total of 647.

Entering Tuesday’s final round, Argyle was tied for second place, six strokes ahead of fourth-place Andrews. Llano, which led by five strokes after the first round, shot 339 Tuesday and finished fourth.

Andrews shot 10 strokes lower than it did Monday, while Argyle shot six strokes higher. The Eagles shot 326 on Tuesday.

Bell said he’s proud of his team’s third straight state tournament appearance and his team’s resilience on the last day.

“We battled,” Bell said. “We played better on the back [nine]; we struggled on the front. My kids kept battling. They battled the whole tournament.”
