Golf roundup: Eagles claim regional crown

POTTSBORO — The Argyle boys held off a late charge Tuesday from Texarkana Pleasant Grove to claim the Class 3A Region II championship and qualify for the UIL state tournament in Austin.

The Eagles entered the final round after shooting a 311 on Monday with a 10-stroke lead over Pleasant Grove but shot a 315 on Tuesday and held off Pleasant Grove (307) to win by two strokes.

Argyle placed five players in the top 20 with a well-rounded day. Only the top four scores are counted, while the worst of the five scores is thrown out. The Eagles were led by Nick Louy and Tommy Parker, who tied for sixth place with two-day scores of 155.

The Eagles advance to the Class 3A state tournament, which takes place April 28-29 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort near Bastrop.

Argyle’s Alex Isakson tied for ninth with a two-day score of 157. Colton Katzen had a two-day score of 161 to finish in 16th place. Lance Roden finished in a tie for 21st at 165, and Matt Garnett tied for 17th with a two-day score of 162 competing as an individual.

Aubrey’s Cole Cannon finished with a two-day score of 169 to finish in a tie for 28th place, and Sanger’s Brendon Cochran finished in a tie for 50th with a two-day score of 181.

On the girls side, the Sanger team finished 13th place with a two-day score of 887, led by Olivia Couch, who had a two-day 210.

Argyle had two golfers compete as individuals, as Jesse Sheridan finished in a tie for 20th with a two-day score of 199 and Leyton King finished tied for 24th with a 202. Krum’s Emilia Hull finished in a tie for 62nd at 232.

 

Guyer takes second

ABILENE — Guyer is headed to the Class 4A state tournament for the second straight year after the Wildcats finished second in the Region I tournament at Diamondback Golf Club.

The Wildcats shot a two-day 625 and improved upon their first-round score by 25 strokes to finish second behind Trophy Club Nelson, which defended its regional championship with a 612.

Guyer finished 17 strokes ahead of third-place Wolfforth Frenship.

The Wildcats were led by four players who shot in the 70s Tuesday after a blustery opening round on Monday. Brady Hanley led the bunch with a 2-over 73. Grant Studdard and Jeremiah Earle followed with 74 and 75, respectively. Garrett Underwood shot a 78, and Conner Ross followed up his round-leading 74 with an 86 on Tuesday.

Guyer will play in the 4A state tournament on April 28 and 29 at the University of Texas Golf Club. Last year, Guyer finished ninth at the state tournament in its inaugural trip to Austin.
