AUSTIN -- Kyle Hodges finished his high school career — not to mention a historic season for the Guyer golf team — on a high note Tuesday at the UIL Class 4A state tournament.
Hodges, the lone senior on the team, shot a 1-over-par 71 and birdied the 18th hole at Onion Creek Club in Austin.
Hodges finished in a tie for 26th with an 8-over score of 148 to lead Guyer, which finished ninth in the 12-team field with a 50-over 610. Highland Park’s Blue team won the title with an even-par 560.
Guyer finished at 25-over 305 in both rounds.
Highland Park Blue’s Scottie Scheffler won the individual title with a 5-under 135 after shooting a 6-under 64 in the final round.
“It was a good showing for us,” Guyer coach Roddy Adams said. “We played great through 13 holes. A few of our boys didn’t do as well the last five holes. We made the turn at 7 over as a team. If you would take that to 18 holes, that would be 294. But if you told me in September that we would shoot 610 at state, I would have taken it.”
Guyer made its first appearance at state while also becoming the first Denton school district team to play in the event since 1991.
Guyer’s Jeremiah Earle shot an 11-over 151, Brady Hanley a 155, Garrett Underwood a 156 and Connor Ross a 182.
“It was a great experience for the guys who are coming back,” Adams said. “They will play a lot of summer tournaments. Our goal next year will be to finish in the top three.”
Guyer will have to replace its top player in Hodges, who is set to continue his career at Sam Houston State following a solid final tournament with the Willdcats.
Hodges bogeyed two of his first three holes Tuesday but came back to birdie the par-4 eighth and 14th holes. He fell back to 2 over with bogies on the 16th and 17th holes before finishing with a birdie.
“That was a great way to end the tournament,” Adams said. “I’m proud of him.”
