MILTON, Ga. — Playing on college golf’s biggest stage with a national title on the line, North Texas senior Rodolfo Cazaubon didn’t shrink from the challenge Tuesday.
Cazaubon delivered a 2-under 68 and sat in a tie for eighth place after the opening round of the NCAA Division I tournament.
Cazaubon, going after the individual national championship, is in a prime position after the first 18 holes.
He was one of only 20 players to post a score under par in the field of 156 golfers.
Jon Rahm of Arizona State set a course record on the Capital City Club’s Crabapple course with a 9-under-par 61 and held the overall lead after the first round. He will take a four-shot lead into the second round.
Cazaubon got off to a roaring start, as he was 3 under through the first five holes.
He birdied Nos. 2, 4 and 5. He remained at 3 under until posting his first bogey of the day on the 12th hole. He bounced back with his fourth birdie of the day on No. 16 hole but gave the stroke back with his only other bogey on the 17th hole.
Cazaubon had the lowest score among the six players who are playing as individuals.
Today, he will tee off at 8 a.m. on the 10th hole.
