North Texas’ bid for a second straight Sun Belt Conference title got off to a bit of a slow start as the 38th-ranked Mean Green is in a three-way tie for third place after Monday’s opening round in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
UNT shot a 7-over par 295 and is tied with Georgia State and Middle Tennessee. The three teams trail No. 49 South Alabama by nine shots and Arkansas-Little Rock by two, heading into to today’s second round. The tournament ends Wednesday.
UNT senior Rodolfo Cazaubon is tied for sixth after firing an even-par 72 and trails leader Lane Hulse of South Alabama by four shots.
Carlos Ortiz and Curtis Donahoe both posted 2-over par scores of 74 and are tied for 14th, while Gonzalo Rubio is one stroke behind at 3-over par 75. Marco Scarola shot a 79 and is tied for 43rd.
