STATESBORO, Ga. — Playing in the prestigious Schenkel Invitational for the first time, No. 25 North Texas locked itself into a tie for ninth after an opening-round 296.
The tournament features three teams in the top 10 and five in the top 25.
Jason Roets and Carlos Ortiz both shot 1-over-par 73 to lead the Mean Green. They are tied for 22nd place.
Roets was 5 over with four holes left, before finishing with four straight birdies. Ortiz was 3 over after six holes but played the last 12 holes at 2 under.
UNT’s Rodolfo Cazaubon and Gonzalo Rubio were tied for 45th after shooting 75. Curtis Donahoe posted a 76 and was tied for 55th.
No. 6 Texas was atop the leaderboard after 18 holes. No. 4 Alabama was two shots back.
