Airbus now plans to begin production on the A321 model at its first U.S. plant, rather than the A320 as it had previously planned.

According to a report from Reuters, Airbus Americas President Barry Eccleston said Tuesday that the switch at the Mobile, Ala., factory was being made because of growing demand for larger aircraft.

The first A321 is expected to come off the line in Alabama in April 2016, with the A321neo (new-engine option) model to follow.

Airbus, which has its North American engineering headquarters in Wichita, first announced plans for the Mobile plant in 2012.
