The little strokes of watercolors and the smell of Elmer’s glue are their own special kind of therapy, and that’s precisely why art therapy with children can be so successful. Children who engage in art activities find themselves in a mindset where they can better process trauma and start to heal emotional pain associated with child abuse. The Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, which helps to improve the lives of abused children through a variety of services, celebrates the potency of art therapy as part of the healing process in their Art for Advocacy 2014 event at 7 p.m. Saturday until midnight at the Fashion Industry Gallery, 1807 Ross Avenue. Local arts organizations, artists, galleries, and patrons of the arts come together to raise funds for DCAC at this gala, which includes both silent and live auctions of over 100 pieces of art, plus vacation packages and other goodies. Enjoy music from James Gabriano, DJ S.O.U.L.Jah and the Polyphonic Spree while you nosh on Texas tapas plates and sip on tequila. Tickets to this worthiest of causes start at $150; visit dcac.org to purchase.
