Cowboys’ Henry Melton: What facing ‘warrior’ Tony Romo is like for an opponent

IRVING — Henry Melton said he took a knee and said a prayer when he saw Tony Romo laying on the AT&T Stadium turf Monday night.

The Dallas Cowboys veteran defensive lineman was relieved to see Romo able to return in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

“It shows what type of guys he is,” Melton said. “He’s a warrior.”

Melton already had a pretty good understanding of Romo’s toughness before he ever joined the Cowboys. While in Chicago, Melton faced Romo twice. In 2012, he sacked Romo and hit him another time during Chicago’s 34-18 win.

“I’ve been on the other side of it, I’ve hit him, he’s gotten up,” Melton said Wednesday. “I’ve hit him again and he’s gotten up. So it’s good to have that type of guy on your team.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also talked about Romo’s toughness on Wednesday.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anybody who has a tougher will, his mind, and it helps him tremendously with pain threshold, combination of those two things,” Jones said after a press conference at AT&T Stadium. “He’s as tough-minded and physically tough a player as I’ve ever been around.”

“It’s tough to see him go down like that, but it was good to see him come back, I’ll tell you that much,” Cowboys defensive lineman Jeremy Mincey said. “I’m just proud that he’s fine.”
