Blotter: UNT police searching for clues in bike thefts

The University of North Texas police are searching for suspect information linked to recent bicycle thefts.

According to police, three bicycles have been reported stolen from outside Santa Fe Square while locked to a railing near the dorm.

Police are asking students to be vigilant and report any suspicious people or activity as soon as you see it.

A crime bulletin issued Wednesday by UNT police offered the following tips:

Properly secure your bicycle to racks using a U- lock without cables or chains.

Record your bicycle’s make, model and serial number.

Photograph your bicycle to aid in identification of your property.

Anyone with information about the thefts or possible suspect(s) is asked to call the UNT police criminal investigations division at 940-565-3006 or UNT Crime Stoppers at 940-369-TIPS.

Other reports

1000 block of Lakeside Amenity Center Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Paloma Creek area on Monday morning after someone reported a theft, reports show.

Officials said someone took a sign off one of the community watch volunteer’s cars. No arrests have been made and a theft report was completed.

Cook and Robertson Streets Denton officers were dispatched to a traffic hazard Tuesday after a caller reported an 18-wheeler attempted to go under the railroad bridge.

According to reports, officers observed an 18-wheeler cab stuck on the grassy median and its trailer blocking the intersection upon arrival.

When officers attempted to contact a man near the accident, he fled on foot but was soon taken into custody, reports show.

Police said they later learned the man was the driver of the vehicle. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and evading detention.

From 7 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday:

Denton County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers handled 825 service and officer-initiated calls for the agencies they serve. Thirty-seven people were booked into Denton County Jail.

Denton police handled 318 service and officer-initiated calls and posted 20 reports online.

Denton fire reports were not available at press time.
