Boots, BBQ & Donations At Toyota Block Party In Plano

COLLIN COUNTY (CBS 11 NEWS) – Javier Moreno has worked for Toyota for 10 years. He says he remembers the day he heard the news that jolted the automotive industry earlier this year: Toyota would move its U.S. headquarters from the Los Angeles area to Plano.
Moreno remembered, “I couldn’t believe it. I was excited, but at the same time, I had a lot of questions.”
While the auto-giant threw a large block party Monday in Plano to celebrate its future move… Moreno is already here. The manager of corporate communications for Toyota North America relocated to Dallas’ Uptown neighborhood two months ago and says he loves it.
“The cost of living is lower, the entertainment options are many, and at an affordable price.”
Toyota North America’s CEO Jim Lentz got the first cowboy boots with his company’s logos. Lentz has already moved here too, but says he isn’t sure how many of their employees will join them.
“We’ve basically told all our associates that if you want to come to Plano with us, you have a job in Plano. But for a number of different reasons, people may not be able to make that move, so we’ll have a better idea about that this time next year.”
The company will have 4,000 employees in Plano. It’s consolidating operations from California, New York, and Kentucky.
Moreno believes the corporate move here will help Toyota — and him. “To have everybody under one roof and to walk down the hallway and say hey, I need this, so, yes my job will be easier.”
The new headquarters building on Legacy Drive and Sam Rayburn Tollway will open in 2017.
On Monday, Toyota donated $1 million to Plano ISD’s Academy High School. The automaker also gave the city of Plano six of its made-in-Texas Tundra pick-up trucks.
