FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The next phase in a case against a Fort Worth veterinarian took place on Tuesday in Austin. Dr. Lou Tierce has been accused of keeping dogs alive despite telling the owners that the pets had been euthanized. The doctor’s alleged actions led to a raid of his office, an investigation and lawsuits.
Tierce’s office was shut down in April, after state officials raided the animal clinic. During that raid, the Fort Worth office was found to be dirty and in disarray. Tierce was arrested for animal cruelty and the state suspended his veterinarian’s license over the summer. Another veterinarian is now working in the facility.
The Harris family said that Tierce secretly kept their dog alive for six months after they believed that the doctor put the animal down. The family is now suing for $1 million.
The doctor admitted to making some mistakes and to hoarding, but he had been desperately trying to get his veterinarian’s license back. Tierce has been practicing for 48 years.
The State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners reached an agreement with Tierce back in August, however, the details of that arrangement were not made clear until Tuesday after the board’s regular meeting in Austin. According to Tierce’s attorney, the doctor’s license will be suspended for five years.
