Attorney Harris Hughey has no plans to seek a recount after suffering a narrow defeat to incumbent Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace J.W. Hand in Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff election.

Hand eked by Hughey with 50.5 percent of the vote to Hughey’s 49.5 percent, winning with just a 56-vote margin in complete but unofficial returns.

Hughey did not offer much comment other to say he would let the results stand unchallenged.

Hand said he had no thoughts on whether Hughey would seek a recount.

“He’s entitled, now that he knows the land, to take another shot at it,” he said. “Many people do.”

Hand said he intends to focus on living up to the trust of the voters that helped keep him on the bench for another term.

The county had a recount from this year’s primary election in March when George Mitcham filed for a recount of the votes in his race for County Criminal Court No. 3 against incumbent Judge David Garcia.

Mitcham paid a $15,900 deposit but only $7,174.70 was needed to pay for the recount. The rest was returned to Mitcham.
