Les Cockrell: Trick-or-treaters invited to Boo Bash on campus

The annual Boo Bash is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the University of North Texas Coliseum, according to an event announcement.

Area families are invited to grab their costumes and join student organizations at UNT for an evening of carnival games, fun and candy. Boo Bash is free and open to the community.

The coliseum is at 600 Ave. D. Free parking will be available at the Fouts Field parking lot, on North Texas Boulevard across from the coliseum. Attendees should enter the coliseum at Gates D or G.

Liberty Christian choir to perform current pop hits

Area families are invited to attend two pop concerts featuring the Liberty Christian School Chorale this week. The concerts will be offered at 7 p.m. today and Tuesday.

The music will feature some of today’s latest hits performed by Liberty’s Upper School Chorale, according to a news release.

Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Free session offers financial strategies for retirement

A free presentation on financial strategies for retirement will be offered at 7 p.m. today at Denton’s North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St.

Tim Smith, a retirement specialist and financial representative for Modern Woodmen of America, will be featured speaker.

Environmental learning area to host night hike on Friday

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area will host a night hike from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, according to an event announcement.

Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu, and there is a $5 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee of $5 per person.

The environmental learning area is open to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The entrance is at the intersection of Jones and Kealy streets in Lewisville.

Red Cross announces four blood drives in county

The American Red Cross has announced four Denton County blood drives this week.

Hours and locations are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Trugreen, 1801 Lake Pointe Drive in Lewisville; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Retractable Tech, 511 Lobo Lane in The Colony; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at The Colony Community Center, 5151 N. Colony Blvd.; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at The Joint, 3750 Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound.

All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health are eligible to donate blood.

Families invited to apply for Salvation Army holiday aid

Qualifying families can now apply for the Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program, according to an announcement from the Salvation Army.

The program is made possible through the generosity of Denton residents who want to share the spirit of the season. Assistance is for children ages 14 and younger, the announcement stated.

Applicants must be the head of household or the spouse of the head of household, or must be an adult of the household and present a notarized letter from the head of household authorizing application for the family with that person’s ID, according to the announcement. No children are allowed during the application process.

To file an application, visit 2801 N. Elm St. in Denton from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

All individuals living in the household should be listed on one application. Proof of citizenship is not required. Applicants must present documentation of all people residing at their address and have valid personal identification with photo and proof of income. Exact clothing sizes for each child must be provided.

Suicide prevention coalition to meet Friday in Denton

The Denton Regional Suicide Prevention Coalition will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Denton County MHMR, 2509 Scripture St. in Denton.

First Christian invites families to Halloween event

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Denton has invited area families to celebrate Halloween in a safe church environment from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Vehicle trunks will be decorated and treats will be available. Participants are invited to bring a canned food item for the Denton Food Center.

Foundation awards grant to help Lewisville seniors

The CoServ Charitable Foundation recently awarded the Lewisville Senior Activity Center a $10,474 grant to support iPad training for seniors, according to a news release from the city of Lewisville.

The CoServ funding will support Lewisville High School students serving as instructors of seniors at Lewisville Senior Activity Center. This intergenerational collaboration enables the younger generation to teach the older generation about up-to-date technology, according to the release.

Michael Cogliano, president of Associates of the Lewisville Senior Activity Center, announced receipt of the grant. ALSAC is a nonprofit established to generate funding for new and improved services and activities at the Senior Center.

Mary Worthington, administrator of the CoServ Charitable Foundation, noted in the news release that the funding enables purchasing iPads for daily use in the Senior Center library and acquiring new chairs for the center’s classroom.
