Marvel announces Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and more

Today, Marvel Entertainment held an event to talk about details and make announcements regarding the future of their film franchises. The event was liveblogged on their website, and the info dump was packed with news that should have fans of their movies very excited.

Perhaps the biggest and most exciting news is that the third chapter of the blockbuster Avengers films will be a two-parter, and it sounds like the story will focus on the Infinity Gauntlet (as has been expected for awhile). The film will be called Avengers: Infinity War, and part one will debut May 4, 2018, with part two following on May 3, 2019.

Also announced was Captain America: Civil War. This one kind of leaked out early, when Variety reported that Robert Downey Jr. would be appearing as Iron Man in the third Captain America film. I’m personally going to be a little bummed if they don’t make full use of the Civil War storyline by including a ton of different Marvel super heroes (Avengers style), but I’ll wait and see how it turns out.

Later, Marvel brought out Chadwick Boseman (who played Jackie Robinson in 42), who will be playing the Marvel character Black Panther in a movie of the same name. The film will debut November 3, 2017. Boseman was met with a big applause and said, “I’m blessed to be apart of this Marvel Universe, to work with you both, and to make magic together.”

As Boseman met the crowd, Robert Downey Jr. told him, “Welcome to the fray, get used to that applause.”

Other movies got announcements, titles and release dates, though not much more was revealed immediately. The biggest of these might be Captain Marvel, which some fans have been clamoring for. Thor’s third outing also got a subtitle, and is now Thor: Ragnarok.
