How do I download a video file? All I get is a new window with the video playing.

To download a video, click the Download button that appears below the video player. Once you’ve done that, a little menu will appear, and in some cases, you’ll see links for several different versions of the video, including a mobile, SD, and/or HD file. You’ll need to decide which version of the video you’d like to download, and click to make the magic happen.

Depending on your browser, clicking the link may result in the video playing in a new tab instead of downloading the file to your computer. Don’t panic! If this occurs:
  • For Windows users: Right-click on the link and choose “Save as” or “Save target as.”
  • For Mac users: Hold down the Control key on your keyboard and click the link, then choose “Save link as” or “Download linked file.”

Are there limits on downloading original source files?

Plus and PRO members have the ability to store their original, untranscoded source files right here on Vimeo. This means that, if you are a Plus or PRO member that chooses to store your source files, you will always be able download your original file, as long as you maintain your paid subscription with us. You can choose to make your original file downloadable by others, too!

Please note that logged out viewers, or viewers without a Vimeo account, will not have the ability to download source files, though they will be able to download the converted MP4 versions of the videos. Exceptions are made for PRO Video Review and Portfolio pages.

While Basic members can indeed download the source files made available by Plus and PRO members, they do not have the ability to store or share their own source files on Vimeo.

Don't want viewers to be able to download your videos, period? No problem! You can easily disable the ability for folks to download your work.

Why do I have to wait to download this original source file?

Sometimes when you try to access an original source file (when you click Download on the video page, then click “Original”), you may see this message:

“This source file has been lovingly stored in our archive.”

Because it’s expensive for us to store tons of original source files locally, we move some of them to our additional storage servers. This usually occurs when a file hasn’t been accessed for more than 30 days.

These files are still available for download, but you might have to wait a few hours before you can access them. We’ll email to let you know when they’re ready!

Why are some videos available for downloading, but others aren't?

Some people would rather not allow their videos to be downloaded, and we respect that. Under Privacy Settings, we let our members specify whether they want to allow downloading.

If a member has disabled downloading, you won’t see the Download button on the video page. We simply wouldn’t tease you like that.
