In her new book, Notes From a Maine Kitchen: Seasonally Inspired Recipes, food writer Kathy Gunst takes us into a year of her life as she cooks by the season and month, celebrating the bounty of Maine. And unlike her many recipe-driven cookbooks . . . this new book is a literary and life journey. (Seacoast Online)
So many cookbooks follow this same theme—chasing the public interest in seasonal, local foods—but readers will find Gunst's take on the trend and her conversational tone refreshing. The book basically illustrates, through the vehicle of food, what it's like to live in Maine year-round. (Portland Press Herald)
Kathy Gunst's new cookbook, Notes From a Maine Kitchen: Seasonally Inspired Recipes, isn't just another collection of Maine recipes. What a delicious book! It's fun just to see the recipes for Maine foods like smelt and ramps. I made the potato-leek soup and pumpkin-seed brittle for friends and now they think I can cook. But what really makes me love the book are the stories Kathy tells about living in Maine: fishing, hiking in the rain, and making blueberry pie in an isolated cabin. She is a lyrical writer, and I savored each account.

I have read and have several other books by Kathy and she knows her stuff. This book is easily as good if not better than the others.I highly recommend this book for reading and recipes. Kathy knows how to write so that you are engaged and excited to try recipes that you haven't. Most all of the recipes work without changing them at all, that tells me what a great cook she is. Go get. Thanks Kathy.

It's rare to read something that captures a state's magic in words, rarer still to find a book that pairs captivating storytelling with recipes that actually make you want to bring the book into the kitchen and cook. Seldom is one book simultaneously so welcome on bedside and kitchen tables... now I just have to figure out how to get chocolate cake crumbs out of the creases in my bedspread.

There are all sorts of pleasures to be had between the covers of NOTES FROM A MAINE KITCHEN. Kathy Gunst's recipes are created from the bounties of Maine's sea and soil. They are wonderful adventures into culinary Maine, month by month. And the essays that accompany each section afford the reader quirky, personal, warm and often very funny stories of the people-- family, friends, fishermen, mushroom hunters, bakers--who are many of the recipes' "collaborators." This book is an original!

I recently heard Kathy Gunst being interviewed on NPR (Robin Young's Here & Now, I think.) She was discussing this book and recipes for Roasted Wild Mushroom Soup and Crusty Bread topped with Caramelized Apples & melted Gruyère Cheese. Doesn't that sound like the perfect lunch for a crisp fall day? I was hooked. The book contains so many seasonal meal ideas and while I probably won't be using the Lobster recipes very often, I will try them all during the coming year.

I started reading these recipes and delightful stories in bed, thinking they would lull me to sleep. Instead she had me salivating by the third chapter and itching to get into the kitchen. I've since purchased multiple copies for family and friends and have made several of the recipes for my own family. Kathy is a wonderful writer, you can't go wrong with this book.
